Rainbow Warrior volleyball: ‘Set-back’ elicits response

By Brian McInnis on April 7, 2019

The Rainbow Warrior volleyball team’s “set-back” was no setback at all. It was probably inevitable that this top-ranked UH team, as good as it is in all facets, was going to drop a frame to someone at some point. And the capacity UH crowd recognized it, giving the ‘Bows a standing ovation between the third and fourth sets of a 25-16, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19 win over the UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. “You don’t go in expecting you’ll beat everybody […]

Rainbow Wahine tennis: Seniors come through on their day

By Brian McInnis on April 6, 2019

The Hawaii women’s tennis seniors took matters into their own hands on their special day. In the case of Sela and Resma, that required coming back from a set down against their opponent. Sela’s 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 […]

Rainbow Warrior volleyball: Finding a way

By Brian McInnis on April 5, 2019

UC Santa Barbara brought the block to the party. Hawaii supplied everything else Friday night. The rollicking Rainbow Warriors were turned back at the net more times against the Gauchos than at any other point in 2019, and it hardly mattered in a 25-18, 25-22, 25-16 sweep of the visitors in front of a raucous, season-high turnstile crowd of 6,969. Top-ranked UH (24-0) extended its record season set streak to 72 and has its first sellout crowd since 1997 to […]

Warrior Beat: The gang’s (almost) all here

By Stephen Tsai on April 4, 2019

In a spring practice that turned into a mini reunion, five former UH coaches attended today’s 2-hour workout on the grass field. June Jones, who has been in town since the beginning of the year, leaves this weekend for his third season coaching the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. Dan Morrison, a former UH quarterbacks coach, has been observing spring practice. Morrison has decided not to return to Hamilton this coming season. Former UH coaches Kanani Souza, George […]

Warrior Beat: Trey time’s a charm

By Stephen Tsai on April 3, 2019

Trey Larsen aced a walk-on tryout more than a year ago, earning a slotback’s spot on the Warriors’2018 spring roster. But his work in those practices and the offseason program did not result in a spot on last year’s team. Undaunted, Larsen participated once again in last month’s walk-on tryouts. He initially was not put on the callback list. But this week, he has rejoined the Warriors — as a cornerback. * * * * * The unlikeliest hero — […]
