Warrior Beat: The gang’s (almost) all here

Alumni roll call (from left): Rich Miano, June Jones, George Lumpkin and Dan Morrison/Photo by Stephen Tsai

In a spring practice that turned into a mini reunion, five former UH coaches attended today’s 2-hour workout on the grass field.

June Jones, who has been in town since the beginning of the year, leaves this weekend for his third season coaching the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.

Dan Morrison, a former UH quarterbacks coach, has been observing spring practice. Morrison has decided not to return to Hamilton this coming season.

Former UH coaches Kanani Souza, George Lumpkin and Rich Miano also attended today’s practice. In 1995, Souza and Lumpkin served as UH’s offensive and defensive coordinators, respectively.

A little college knowledge: Miano also served as a UH head coach — interim, actually, but it still counts — between Greg McMackin‘s release and Norm Chow‘s hiring.

Hopefully next year they’ll play all 4 quarters, even with a marginal lead in the first half.

Whoo-hoo! If only it were possible to harness their collective knowledge and use it every play, every game, every year. Welcome back, coaches!

I see Wilson is the shining star at DB so far! Coach said he’s being called “Wilson Picket” leading the team again with interceptions!

    Howzit Tsaikos!
According to Coach Abe there’s 6 CBs and 10 Safeties in Spring camp. But everyone is waiting for a certain DB from FL to arrive.

Per Artie Wilson’s show on 1420AM this morning, looks like June Jones and some other investors (Artie included?) have invested in the old Wo Fat building. Gonna spice it up, make it into a restaurant.

  26. burro sabio April 6, 2019 8:35 am

#22 – Artie is definitely taking his 3% cut of the sale.

    burro sabio: That’s comedy gold.

  29. cappie the dog April 6, 2019 4:40 pm

This is a deeply flawed analogy but the AAA Padres spent a little more money this season, and they’re batting above .200 and not languishing in last place. They are so “loaded”(for them), Greg Garcia isn’t starting as I anticipated.

Softball is winning, but they have to win the Big West. Sub-100 RPI.

I don’t have a handle on the baseball team yet.

  30. cappie the dog April 7, 2019 12:38 pm

C’mon, Fighting Irish. You don’t want the head coach who probably is all for rolling back Title IX guidelines on college campuses that protect the accuser instead of the victim, and told parents at a pep rally to punch people in the face if they besmirch Baylor’s good name. It disappoints me to see Baylor on any Hawaii team’s schedule.
