Where's that sked?

By Brian McInnis on September 8, 2011

So what’s the holdup with the Hawaii men’s basketball team’s schedule? We’re roughly two months out from the start of the college hoops season, without anything to show for it. The delay is basically this: Filling out the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic has been problematic, to say the least. All assurances from Lower Campus are the schedule will be released, one way or the other, but it could be missing that key element longtime fans are used to. Yup, the long-running […]

Ankles strike again

By Brian McInnis on August 2, 2011

The 10 days of practice allowed prior to the UH basketball Asia tour was seen as a boon for the program, both in preparation for this trip starting Friday and the regular season beyond it. The downside to fully active sessions this time of year is the inherent injury risk, which was felt again today in the team’s afternoon session in Gym 2. Senior guard Zane Johnson became the latest victim of a spate of ankle injuries after landing on […]

By Brian McInnis on July 13, 2011

Tyler Brown, a 6-foot-7, 245-pound power forward from Honaker, Va., will walk on with the Hawaii men’s basketball team next season. The freshman out of the IMG Academy in Florida could provide the team with a little extra muscle and hustle down low in the wake of the news that freshman-to-be Ronnie Stevens will not be joining the team due to academics. Brown’s started open gym workouts with his new Rainbow Warriors teammates in preparation for their upcoming trip to […]

Stokes keeps it going

By Brian McInnis on July 8, 2011

Make that two captivating summer league performances out of two for UH hoops newcomer Shaquille Stokes. After going for 27 in his debut on Tuesday, Stokes followed it up with a 24-point outburst Thursday night in barely over a half of action with Wealth Strategy Partners. Stokes, who played for Army on Tuesday, suited up just before halftime with his unexpected new team and put on a show. The 5-foot-10 freshman point guard from New York went right at former […]

Familiar faces in draft

By Brian McInnis on June 23, 2011

While critics have disparaged this year’s NBA Draft as watered down, and many of the top 10 picks were unrecognizable foreign players to the average hoops fan, a remarkable statistic emerged as the names were called today. Of the first 18 players chosen for the 2011-12 NBA season, eight appeared in games played in Hawaii over the last two seasons, including picks 8 through 12. Here’s a breakdown: No. 2 pick: Derrick Williams, So. PF, Arizona, to Minnesota Timberwolves. Hawaii […]
