UH hoops practice preview

By Brian McInnis on September 24, 2013

Practice? Y’all want to talk about practice? Already? Believe it or not (I can’t), it’s that time again, ladies and gents. The Hawaii men’s basketball team starts up full practices for the 2013-14 season on Friday — a good two and a half weeks ahead of the traditional start to practices of past seasons around Oct. 15. The NCAA bumped up the time coaches get to spend with their players before the season, giving them 30 days of full practices […]

2014 G Fleming visits

By Brian McInnis on August 30, 2013

Could Isaac Fleming be the Hawaii basketball team’s first verbal commitment for the 2014 class? Fleming (not to be confused with ex-‘Bow Rod Flemings), a 6-foot-3, 190-pound left-handed combo guard from Delaware, is visiting the UH campus through Saturday and is weighing a scholarship offer from the Rainbow Warriors. He was on hand for the UH football team’s season-opening loss against USC on Thursday. Fleming, listed as a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, is about to enter his senior season at […]

2013 Summer League postmortem

By Brian McInnis on August 13, 2013

As College Summer Leagues go, this one was quite memorable. The crowds were consistently good, there was always someone or something interesting to watch on a nightly basis, and you couldn’t have asked for a better venue for the playoffs at Maryknoll’s new gym. Now that the 37th running of the league is over and Julian Sensley and Wealth Strategy Partners won the championship (88-78 over top-seeded Central Medical Clinic on Saturday), let’s look back at how the 2013-14 University […]

Summer league final set

By Brian McInnis on August 9, 2013

We have our title match in place. In the first of two College Summer League semifinals at Maryknoll, Julian Sensley uncorked a vintage 33-point performance to lead Wealth Strategy Partners over defending champion Solar Universe, 94-86. In the second semi, top-seeded Central Medical Clinic was surgical late in an 85-67 win over Clark Hatch Fitness. Bill Amis scored 21 points in the victory, in which CMC had to rally from an eight-point halftime deficit. No. 1 Central Medical Clinic (8-3) […]

Semifinal storylines

By Brian McInnis on August 8, 2013

It’s just about time for the College Summer League semifinals at Maryknoll. In Game 1 at 6 p.m., defending champion and second-seeded Solar Universe takes on No. 3 Wealth Strategy Partners. Summer league watchers will recall these two teams got into it a bit the first of two times they met. (More on that below. However, the second meeting just a week ago was uneventful, a Wealth Strategy win against shorthanded Solar.) At full strength, Solar has plenty of players […]

Clark Hatch, Wealth Strategy advance

By Brian McInnis on August 7, 2013

The College Summer League playoffs got started with both a bang and a thud on Tuesday night at Maryknoll’s gym. In the first of two opening-round games, No. 4 Clark Hatch Fitness rallied to prevail 76-71 over No. 5 National Fire Protection and earn a date with top-seeded Central Medical Clinic on Thursday. Leon Ballard scored 19 points to lead the way. In the nightcap, it was a no-doubter as No. 3 Wealth Strategy Partners coasted behind Julian Sensley, Waly […]

Playoffs? Playoffs

By Brian McInnis on August 4, 2013

The College Summer League playoffs are this week, but the “game of the year” in this setting may have just happened over the weekend. Sparked by Bill Amis‘ halftime appearance (he thought the game was at 7:30, not 6 p.m.), Central Medical Clinic rallied from 20 points down to defeat Solar Universe 127-122 in overtime and claim the top seed in the playoffs at 7-3. Amis scored 20 points in the final 25 minutes, while ‘Iolani product Kyle Pape poured […]

Now you know Jack

By Brian McInnis on August 2, 2013

If you’ve got a second to divert your attention away from the offensive coordinator situation with the UH football team, here’s some basketball news for you: Jack Hackman is confirmed as the latest addition for Hawaii. The 6-foot-5, 185-pound swingman, a 2012 graduate of perennial Oregon 6A champ Jesuit High in Portland, will be a preferred walk-on freshman with the Rainbow Warriors for the 2013-14 season and expects to arrive later this month. “I’m really excited about the opportunity. I […]
