Wilton to leave UH

By Stephen Tsai on April 11, 2009

After 17 seasons, Mike Wilton is retiring as head coach of the Warrior volleyball team. Wilton filed for retirement from UH a month ago, and was set to make an announcement at the end of this season. But he moved the announcement to today after news leaked. Wilton already has accepted an offer to serve as an assistant coach for the Brigham Young women’s team. Wilton and his wife will move to Provo this summer. Three of their five adult […]

C-USA is the safe move

By Stephen Tsai on April 10, 2009

Figuring great luck rarely makes an encore, the Hawai‘i Bowl is doing the smart thing in deciding to reach an agreement with Conference USA. Instead of the Pac-10’s seventh-place team, the Hawai‘i Bowl gets the second choice of bowl-eligible C-USA teams. Yes, the letters S-M-U can be read between the lines. Hawai‘i Bowl officials noted that only five Pac-10 teams were eligible last year. Fortunately, it worked out that 6-6 Notre Dame was available.  The chances of a seventh-place Pac-10 […]

Lakers won’t train here in fall

By Stephen Tsai on April 9, 2009

Here’s another drawback to the delayed announcement of the WAC football schedule, which was released last week: the Los Angeles Lakers won’t have training camp in Hawai‘i this fall. The Lakers needed to know the available dates to hold training camp and exhibition games here. But they couldn’t get a window in time because they had  to wait for the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team to learn its schedule, and that was on hold while the  WAC football schedule was being […]

Bolla out as UH coach

By Stephen Tsai on April 8, 2009

UH today made official what was known for a while: Jim Bolla will no longer coach the women’s basketball team. The process was extensive while UH tried to go through “due diligence” steps. A search/screening committee for Bolla’s successor is being formed, but the timeline certainly will hinder recruiting. * * * • In the past 10 years, UH’s four-wide offense had a basic alignment: if the ball is in the middle, there are two receivers on the left and […]

Patek gets CFL deal; brakes on car program

By Stephen Tsai on April 7, 2009

Former UH safety Jake Patek is set to receive a two-year contract from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. Patek, who completed his UH eligibility at the end of the 2008 Sugar Bowl, participated in last week’s Pro Day in Carson, Calif. It was there where he met Richard Wade, an area scout for the Tiger-Cats. Patek then learned the Tiger-Cats were  holding tryouts the past Saturday in Dallas. With the help of former UH coaches June Jones […]

Spring practice No. 4

By Stephen Tsai on April 6, 2009

• Left wideout Rodney Bradley made the best play today, catching an inside screen, and then juking safety Spencer Smth for a big gain. Bradley, who played in a run-oriented offense at Navarro College last year, is feeling more comfortable in the offense. • Despite the mis-step, Smith is having a solid spring. He’s been a No. 1 safety every practice. • The Warriors are placing more emphasis in the trenches. There is an extended drill that focuses solely on […]

Fehoko faces challenge

By Stephen Tsai on April 5, 2009

Whitley Fehoko’s football career is apparently over. Fehoko, who hoped to play for the Warriors this fall, was diagnosed with an irregular heart beat. He is likely to undergo a procedure to correct a faulty heart valve. * * * Bryant Moniz finally was able to get some significant reps at quarterback during yesterday’s practice. Moniz, a Leilehua graduate who attended Fresno City College for a season, made several strong throws during team drills. “I was nervous just getting back […]

Spring practice No. 3

By Stephen Tsai on April 4, 2009

Today was the first spring practice in pads, and there was some hitting, despite Coach Greg McMackin’s  warning. “Only two hand touch,” McMackin told the players before team drills. Perhaps he should have been more specific. Linebackers R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane, Brashton Satele and Marc Moody delivered some hard “touches.” “Sometimes they forget,” McMackin said, smiling. At practice: • Greg Salas worked out exclusively as the left slotback. He gives Greg Alexander a nice target. • With Salas at slotback, Joe Avery […]
