Cindy Luis covers University of Hawaii volleyball for the Star-Advertiser. She began her career as a sports journalist in Hawaii in 1981 with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and was the sports editor, assistant sports editor, columnist and beat writer during a 31-year span before the paper became the Star-Advertiser. She graduated from UCLA in 1977 with a B.A. in Communication Studies.

Former University of Hawaii middle blocker Emily Maglio had four kills and a block but it was not enough as Canada lost to the U.S. 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19 in the Pan American Cup women’s volleyball tournament on today in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. University of Hawaii men’s volleyball players Colton Cowell and Brett Rosenmeier finished 13th at the World University Beach Volleyball Championships in Munich, Germany, today. Cowell-Rosenmeier, seeded 28th, upset No. 2 seed Mateusz Lysikowski and Mateusz Paszkowski of Poland, 21-18, 12-21, 15-12 in a match that lasted 43 minutes at the TUM courts at Olympic Park. Former Hawaii All-American volleyball player Emily Maglio has helped Canada advance to Friday’s semifinals of the Pan American Cup in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Maglio had a combined 29 points in Canada’s sweeps of Peru, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic to win Group A. The U.S. men’s national volleyball team, has revised its training and match schedule for later this month. Expected to be among those training at ‘Iolani School on July 26 are Kawika Shoji (‘Iolani), Erik Shoji (Punahou) and Micah Christenson (Kamehameha).
