Another ex-Missouri visitor

By Brian McInnis on December 17, 2013

The Hawaii basketball team is looking to add to its stockpile of ex-Missouri players. Former Tiger forward Stefan Jankovic (not to be confused with current Rainbow Warrior Stefan Jovanovic) is inbound to make an official visit to the Manoa campus. Should he commit, he’ll follow in the footsteps of Negus Webster-Chan, who is redshirting at UH as a Division I transfer from MU. Like Webster-Chan, Jankovic is from Ontario, Canada. Like Jovanovic, Jankovic was born in Serbia. He has two years of […]

Gamenight: New Mexico State

By Brian McInnis on November 11, 2013

The Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic meant something a little different to Negus Webster-Chan than the rest of his Hawaii teammates. NWC, who is redshirting as a transfer from Missouri, got to reconnect with a few old friends who play for New Mexico State, UH’s opponent tonight in the ESPN College Hoops Tip-off Marathon. Webster-Chan, of Scarborough, Ontario, got to meet up with NMSU’s native Canadians Daniel Mullings and Renaldo Dixon, and brothers Sim and Tanveer Bhullar. “They’re like my brothers. Not […]

MASH unit

By Brian McInnis on October 24, 2013

A confluence of circumstances left the Hawaii basketball team more shorthanded than usual on Wednesday. In addition to existing injuries to center Caleb Dressler and point guard Niko Filipovich, UH was without lead guard Keith Shamburger, shooting guard Jack Hackman and wing Negus Webster-Chan. A team manager was also out of commission. Shamburger and Hackman (and the manager) were out with illnesses. Webster-Chan took a shot to the eye earlier this week. Dressler still seems a long ways off from […]

Green & White rewind

By Brian McInnis on October 22, 2013

Hawaii basketball’s Green & White Scrimmage experiment on Saturday wasn’t perfect (it could have used game jerseys that were, you know, green and white), but it was a fair platform to introduce the 2013-14 Rainbow Warriors without any set national date for Midnight Madness events this year. There was more actual basketball action than you could ask for in previous iterations of the Ohana Hoopfest/Twilight Ohana/Midnight Ohana. The crowd of about 1,000 was also respectable, and the team and coaches […]

No playing favorites

By Brian McInnis on October 8, 2013

With great playing time comes great responsibility. Hawaii coach Gib Arnold had seen about enough of his current first five — Keith Shamburger, Garrett Nevels, Brandon Spearman, Isaac Fotu and Christian Standhardinger — for lackadaisical play while working through a new offensive set in Tuesday’s practice in Gym 2. The five were excused for the last half hour or so of the abbreviated (roughly two hours) practice, then allowed in afterward to work on their game independently. Spearman and Standhardinger […]

Rainbow Wahine get started + UHMBB notes

By Brian McInnis on October 2, 2013

It feels right to have some semblance of equality again in the practice start dates of the  Hawaii men’s and women’s basketball teams. This year, they opened up just a day apart after the last two years of the Rainbow Wahine operating about two weeks ahead. Laura Beeman‘s crew got under way on Tuesday in Gym 2 on the UH Lower Campus. Her no-nonsense approach was back in a hurry. Beeman played no favorites with familiar faces, getting on returning […]

Das Boom rules King of the Beach

By Brian McInnis on September 28, 2013

Christian Standhardinger was the favorite to repeat as “King of the Beach” champion today, for good reason. He’s got a ridiculous motor. He’s insanely competitive. And he’s a little sneaky. Well, that all came into play in the Hawaii senior forward’s narrow victory over the field in Saturday morning’s UH basketball preseason fitness competition at Queens Beach in Waikiki. Standhardinger edged senior center Davis Rozitis by a point, and redshirt freshman Dyrbe Enos, holding it down for the local boys, […]

UH hoops practice preview

By Brian McInnis on September 24, 2013

Practice? Y’all want to talk about practice? Already? Believe it or not (I can’t), it’s that time again, ladies and gents. The Hawaii men’s basketball team starts up full practices for the 2013-14 season on Friday — a good two and a half weeks ahead of the traditional start to practices of past seasons around Oct. 15. The NCAA bumped up the time coaches get to spend with their players before the season, giving them 30 days of full practices […]
