Tough loss fuels Rainbow Wahine water polo

By Jason Kaneshiro on March 20, 2017

Perched high above the pool, Hawaii head coach Maureen Cole had a clear view of the Rainbow Wahine water polo team’s resilience in a win over Indiana on Saturday. Given a red card late in UH’s controversial loss to No. 1 USC on Friday, Cole was restricted from the pool deck for the following match and observed the 11-5 Rainbow Wahine victory over the Hoosiers from the roof of the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex while assistant Katie Teets managed the […]

UH water polo hosts No. 1 USC in home debut

By Jason Kaneshiro on March 17, 2017

Maureen Cole crafted the University of Hawaii water polo team’s 2017 schedule to test the Rainbow Wahine. Sure, UH’s sixth-year head coach would have preferred to see a few close losses tilt the other way in a 9-8 season to date. But Cole remains focused on the benefits of learning through challenges. “The way you get to become the best is to play the best consistently,” Cole said. “So we don’t have a fluff schedule, that’s for sure.” After playing […]

Now in her 11th year with the Rainbow Wahine water polo program, Maureen Cole can’t recall a pool of talent quite this deep. Along with returning nearly the entire roster off last year’s 20-8 team, the Wahine welcome back three redshirts who ranked among the top four scorers of the 2015 Big West title team while adding a promising freshman class to the mix. “I hate to get ahead of myself, but this is by far been the deepest Hawaii […]

Without a senior on a young roster, the Rainbow Wahine will close the home schedule on Saturday without the traditional postgame farewells. In the meantime, the Wahine continue the growth process as they head toward the postseason. “This is a young team and it takes a long time to gel,” UH coach Maureen Cole said. “Last year’s team had a bunch of girls […]

Hawaii will open its fifth appearance in the National Collegiate Women’s Water Polo Championship against a familiar nemesis.
