Tough times for Funaki

By Stephen Tsai on December 13, 2008

Keep Inoke Funaki and his family in your thoughts. The interior of the  family house suffered significant damage from Thursday’s storm. * * * Add three more to the graduation list: Jake Patek Michael Lafaele Brad Kalilimoku Lafaele has worked with autistic children the past semester. Patek and Kalilimoku were student managers for the Warriors. What’s more, Kalilimoku is running the Hawai‘i Speed and Quickiness’ after-school program in Waianae. Kalilimoku has spent his own money to buy supplies for students. […]

JC running back picks UH

By Stephen Tsai on December 12, 2008

Running back Chizzy Dimude of Laney College in Oakland has accepted a UH football scholarship. Dimode can run 40 yards in 4.41 seconds. Best of all, he comes highly recommended. Laney’s offensive coordinator, John Beam, was Davone Bess’ high school coach. Beam helped steer Bess and Dimude to UH. Dimude has been compared to Daniel Libre. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-y7mq8_D9U * * * These are the confirmed Warriors who will graduate next week: Keith AhSoon C.J. Allen-Jones Jameel Dowling Inoke Funaki Tyson Kafentzis […]

Ma‘afala to join UH

By Stephen Tsai on December 11, 2008

Yep, it’s true. Mililani offensive lineman Benson Ma‘afala Jr. said he made a verbal commitment to the Warriors yesterday. Ma‘afala is capable of playing guard or center, but he is projected to compete at center at UH. He is 6 feet 3 and 310 pounds. He can bench press 185 pounds 36 times. * * * My bad. It’s now just Damien Memorial School. It lost its “High” when it added an intermediate school, I’ve been told. Of course, in […]

JC safety chooses UH

By Stephen Tsai on December 10, 2008

The Warriors filled yet another need, receiving a commitment from safety Aaron Brown of Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, Calif. Brown is 6 feet 1 and 215 pounds. He can run 40 yards in under 4.5 seconds. And he’s from a pretty good JC — the school that produced Colt Brennan, Jason Whieldon and Mike Tinoco, as well as basketball players Anthony “A.C.” Carter, Tes Whitlock, Micah Kroeger and Eric Ambrozich. After the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl, UH loses safeties Keao […]

JC cornerback, d-lineman commit

By Stephen Tsai on December 9, 2008

Cornerback Lametrius Davis of Butte College and defensive lineman Zack Masch of Arizona Western College made verbal commitments to UH yesterday. Davis is 6 fee1 and 193 pounds. He ran 40 yards in 4.38 seconds at the NorCal JC Combine the past summer. He has a 36-inch vertical jump. Masch is 6 feet 3 and 290 pounds. He can bench press a maximum 405 pounds. He was a high school teammate of UH quarterback Steele Jantz. Masch made the decision […]

Off and on

By Stephen Tsai on December 8, 2008

Today is Greg McMackin’s first off day of the season. Sort of. He will speak at today’s Na Koa meeting. And then he will coordinate recruiting plans. OK, that’s work. But with his schedule, it’s considered to be an off day. * * * If I’m not mistaken, UH football still does not have a full-time secretary. (Just student help, I think.) I bring this up because I called the office twice today and got voice mail.  Oh, wait. Maybe, […]

Punahou's Shutter to UH; Notre Dame to Hawai‘i Bowl

By Stephen Tsai on December 7, 2008

It was a quite a weekend for Punahou quarterback Cayman Shutter. Friday, he passed for 400 yards to lead the Buffanblu to a 38-7 victory over Leilehua in the state Division I championship game. Last night, he accepted a football scholarship from UH. “I’m going to be a Warrior,” Shutter told The Advertiser today. “It was always my first choice.” Shutter had committed to New Mexico during the summer. But that was before UH had made an offer. When New […]

Game Day: Cincinnati

By Stephen Tsai on December 6, 2008

So, I was trying to get comments from each senior this week, but finally had to abandon the project because, well, there were too many of them. (With laziness being my compass, I asked Mack to comment on each one.) That meant I had a lot of leftover notes, including the announcement that the Solo Soljahs will continue. Wuh? Apparently a group of special-teams-related players banded together four years ago. The original members include Jake Ingram, Dane Porlas, Keao Monteilh, […]
