Following the Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on January 15, 2010

This is how you follow today’s volleyball match: http://www.gostanford.com/gametracker/launch/gt_mvolley.html?event=855503&school=stan&sport=mvolley&camefrom=&startschool=& * * * * * In a cost-cutting move last year, UH reduced the travel schedules for several sports programs. For instance, the men’s volleyball and softball teams often arrived at a Mainland site the night before a road game, often missing an opportunity to practice at the event’s venue. Apparently, there has been a change in philosophy, starting with the UH football team the past fall The Warriors left on […]

Who's that tall guy on campus?

By Stephen Tsai on January 14, 2010

Remember Ian Scheuring? The Radford grad was an offensive lineman for Arizona State. After a couple of knee surgeries, he’s back in Hawai‘i, and enrolled at UH. He also has another year of eligibility. Will he play again? Not sure. But … * * * * * Anybody else think this is sorta … unique? Dave Shoji is a UH coach who is attending this weekend’s UH-Stanford matches in California. Two of his sons are Stanford starters. Chris McLachlin is […]

He is walking without crutches or a limp, and although he should be healthy for spring training, a more reasonable timetable  is the start of training camp. Here he is striking […]

UH volleyball is No. 8; "LongTimeUHFan"

By Stephen Tsai on January 11, 2010

The Warriors are ranked No. 8 in this week’s AVCA volleyball poll, a jump of four spaces following victories over top-ranked Southern California and Ohio State. Not saying UH should be higher, but does USC still deserve to be No. 1 after losing to UH in four sets? 1. Southern California (2-1) 2. Cal State Northridge (3-0) 3. Stanford (0-0) (Tie) UC Irvine (3-1) 5. Brigham Young (2-1) 6. Penn State (2-1) 7. Pepperdine (0-1) 8. Hawai‘i (2-1) 9. Long […]

By Stephen Tsai on January 9, 2010

Former UH running back/quarterback Inoke Funaki has been named a graduate assistant. He fills the spot vacated when Craig Stutzmann left at the start of the 2009 season. UH still is seeking to replace Mike Smith, who was a GA for defense last year. * * * * * No UH player is on the initial invitation list for  the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. A second wave of invitations will go out in two weeks, after the deadline for […]

Where's the love?

By Stephen Tsai on January 8, 2010

Still feeling sorry for Craig James? According to this report from the Idaho Statesman, James, an ESPN analyst, picked Boise State No. 7 in the final Associated Press poll. http://voices.idahostatesman.com/2010/01/08/bmurphy/how_did_broncos_ended_no_4 James has never shown much love for the non-BCS teams — strange, given that his alma mater (Southern Methodist) is a member of a non-BCS conference. He was one of UH’s most vocal critics during the Warriors’ 12-0 regular season. Aside from that, it’s surprising he is given a vote […]
