Katahara to Na Koa

By Stephen Tsai on May 8, 2010

Alvin Katahara will succeed Don Weir in the role of executive director of Na Koa, the Warrior football team’s booster club. Katahara still will remain as a fund-raiser for the athletic department. * * * * * About a month ago, I asked UH volleyball coach Charlie Wade about an outside hitter from Le Jardin Academy. He nearly single-handedly helped Le Jardin beat my son’s team the night before. After a while, Wade was able to identify the player. The […]

Going green

By Stephen Tsai on May 6, 2010

Barring a personal leave of common sense, the Board of Regents should approve a proposal that would implement a student activity fee that would largely benefit the athletic department. It will be a much-needed boost to the athletic department coffers, and it will keep UH in line with the other WAC schools, each having some form of a student-generated athletic fee. But with great money comes great responsibility. Let’s hope that overly taxed students are permitted good seats — Stanford”s […]

Rich Miano is today's chat guest at noon

By Stephen Tsai on May 5, 2010

We’re calling an audible. UH associate head football coach Rich Miano will be today’s guest on the Warrior Beat Show, which will begin at noon. He’ll discuss the recently completed spring training, as well as this weekend’s activities. We apologize for the late programming, but, hey,  since the band width has been paid, might as well use it. See you there. * * * * * Former UH offensive lineman Aaron Kia has secured a tryout with the New York […]

Moniz apologizes

By Stephen Tsai on May 4, 2010

During yesterday’s team meeting, quarterback Bryant Moniz apologized for actions that led to him being placed on “personal leave” for the final three weeks of the Warriors’ recently completed spring training. Moniz is expected to rejoin the team for next month’s start of the summer conditioning program. By the way, I appreciate that people think I know details about the situation — neighbors, relatives, former classmates — but, nope, I don’t. So, sorry. * * * * * Special thanks […]

Cutbacks

By Stephen Tsai on May 3, 2010

Head coach Greg McMackin said  UH will pare the active roster by 30 to 35 players to make room for recruits, transfers and preferred walk-ons  joining the Warrirors this summer. The NCAA limits training-camp rosters to 105 players, although that number may expand on the first day of a school’s fall  semester. The position coaches will meet with their players this week. McMackin said he will not release a depth chart nor the identities of the cut players. He said […]

Brashton signs with J-E-T-S

By Stephen Tsai on May 2, 2010

Former UH linebacker Brashton Satele said he signed a three-year contract with the New York Jets today. After last week’s NFL draft, Satele signed a free-agent contract with the Oakland Raiders. But the Raiders did not “execute the contract” after receiving a faxed copy of the signed document, allowing Satele to accept an invitation to this weekend’s mini camp with the Jets. Agent Kenny Zuckerman said Satele was brought in as a backup linebacker who also could play on special […]

Congrats

By Stephen Tsai on May 1, 2010

Congrats to the Rainbow Wahine softball team for winning the WAC regular-season title. Well deserved. And also a “nice job” goes to our blog readers, namely Mei Ling, for organizing the “donation” stand at the game; all contributions go to the softball program. Mei Ling has been a dedicated volunteer for Na Koa the past year, and even though she had been away from the islands for a few decades, she has embraced UH athletics since her return. As always, […]
