Hinshaw's impact

By Stephen Tsai on August 24, 2011

Virginia Hinshaw, who will end her tenure as Manoa chancellor at the end of this fiscal year, had a key role in UH athletics. She orchestrated Herman Frazier’s departure as athletic director, hired Greg McMackin as Warrior football coach three weeks before the 2008 signing date, signed off on Jim Donovan’s hiring as AD, and lobbied to implement a student fee. But she had minimal involvement in negotiations to retain June Jones or in talks to help UH gain admission […]

D-line was a delight

By Stephen Tsai on August 19, 2011

The defensive line won the Warriors’ talent show — “Hawaii’s Got Talent” — last night in the athletic complex auditorium. Backup kicker Kenton Chun, a magician, and the quarterbacks/receivers tied for second. In a best-of-three jan ken  po, Royce “Scissorhands” Pollard defeated Chun, giving the quarterbacks/receivers second place. Here are the talent show winners: But the photo was a setup (arranged by assistant coach Cal Lee). While defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga flashed a smile and shaka sign, teammates prepared to […]

Thursday

By Stephen Tsai on August 18, 2011

• Allen Sampson and Scott Harding today were tested under fire for the first time. They both did well in catching the ball under pressure and eluding would-be tacklers in full-contact drills. • While Mike Edwards will be getting the first shot as a kickoff returner, Sampson, Harding and Royce Pollard also will be considered. • Long-snapper Luke Ingram’s left arm was in a sling. Although he will have an MRI, there isn’t much concern. Mostly because Ingram snaps side-armed. […]
