Big Island RB joins Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on July 29, 2014

There will be another Joey in the Warriors’ backfield this training camp. Joseph “Joey” Pacheco, a Big Island resident who played at Hartnell College last year, has joined the Warriors as a walk-on. “I love that kid,” Hartnell coach Matt Collins said. “I think he’ll be a guy, they’ll realize, who brings something to the table.” Collins said the speedy Pacheco was mostly a receiver, but he also can play running back, a position he will be used with the […]

Monday musings

By Stephen Tsai on July 28, 2014

It’s Monday, time to empty to notebook. * * * * * The Warriors’ first practice is a week away, on Monday, Aug. 4. * * * * * The Warriors should have a better understanding of the potential transfers. The NCAA limits training-camp rosters to 105, but they may expand on the first day of  UH’s fall semester (Aug. 25).  The Warriors will not be adding too many after training camp. There are only 110 lockers. Plus, the new […]

Apple fallout

By Stephen Tsai on July 27, 2014

Hawaii News Now’s Keoki Kerr reported that Tom Apple will be removed as UH-Manoa chancellor, an action that will impact the athletic department. Apple has been a supporter financially (absorbing the department’s eight-figure accumulated debt a year ago) and emotionally (he’s the first to greet the Warriors at Aloha Stadium). He’s backed projects, OK’d contracts, and didn’t send in the collectors when the budget was stained with red ink. In these difficult financial times, it’s always good to have friends. […]

Meal plan

By Stephen Tsai on July 26, 2014

The Warriors might have what seems like 99 problems, but a lack of food won’t be one of them. The Warriors will open their proverbial dining tables — and wallets — at least three times daily this year. Financial concerns were raised nationally when the NCAA changed legislation to allow schools to provide unlimited meals to student-athletes, including walk-ons. In the past at UH, the one training table each day was open only to scholarship football players. It is not […]

Empty pit

By Stephen Tsai on July 25, 2014

During football practices, the area where injured players work out is called the “pit.” The goal for the coming training camp is to have an empty pit. This summer, only players who are healthy enough to practice will be invited to the Aug. 4 opening of training camp. Players recovering from significant injuries will be added after they receive medical clearance. The next week will determine whether such players as Samson Anguay, Jamie Tago and Kawika Borden will be ready […]

Eight candles

By Stephen Tsai on July 24, 2014

Happy anniversary to us. The blog turns 8 today. Thanks, everybody. * * * * * With minimal notice — a single line in the media guide — it was confirmed  that Daronte’ Jones has been promoted to assistant head coach. Jones will continue to coach the Warriors’ defensive secondary.
