The Warriors resume practicing today in preparation for their two-game home stand against Nevada and then Utah State. After this, the Warriors will play three of their final four regular-season games on the mainland. Head coach Norm Chow was back in the office early this morning after spending most of the past two days with his wife, who remains hospitalized at UCLA Medical Center.
The only red shirt Beau Reilly will wear will be the red jersey worn by UH quarterbacks during practices. Coach Norm Chow said Reilly, a 22-year-old freshman who has yet to appear in a UH game, is not redshirting this season. “We have six more games to go,” Chow said. “He knows that.” If healthy, Ikaika Woolsey remains as the No. 1 quarterback. Maybe it was the long preconference schedule. Maybe it was, well, whatever. The reality is the Warriors have numerous injuries that are taxing the active roster. No excuses, as they say, but this is how it probably will be the rest of the regular season. UH already has spent its bye. The next two UH games will be played at Aloha Stadium. Maybe that will help a team seeking to regain its rhythm.
SAN DIEGO — Ikaika Woolsey or Beau Reilly? If Woolsey is in good health, he’s expected to start. He was in good health during yesterday’s practice, taking most of the first-team reps. SAN DIEGO — The Warriors will have a modified practice this afternoon ahead of tomorrow night’s road game against San Diego State. For the second consecutive road game, the Warriors traveled on a non-stop flight to the city where the game will be played. There should be a sizable Hawaii following for this game. The hotel lobby has set up an H store. I’ll post photos after today’s practice session.
It appears running back Steven Lakalaka has been cleared to play in Saturday’s road game against San Diego State. Lakalaka left the Wyoming game with what was termed concussion-like symptoms. But he reportedly passed baseline tests. He practiced this morning. The Warriors are scheduled to depart this afternoon.
At this point in the season, like in the pros and many other college programs, the Warriors have had to ease up on the ferocity of practices. For yesterday’s practice, the Warriors cut out two five-minute periods. They also put a few key players on limited-contact status. It makes sense. Quarterback Taylor Graham is scheduled to undergo surgery today to repair a fractured right foot suffered against Wyoming. If his first start of 2014 was the last game of his UH career, Graham should be remembered as a player who did the right things, said the right things, and acted the right way.
