No collateral damage

By Stephen Tsai on January 31, 2015

A not-uncommon scenario is to try to buy tires only to be told, upon further inspection, your car also needs a brake job and other unplanned work. But in the NCAA’s allegations against UH, it is — metaphorically — only about the tires, or in this situation, only about the men’s basketball program. The UH athletic department is consistent in self-reporting any possible infraction, even what would be considered the most manini. Butt dial? UH writes a report. When the […]

Fair game

By Stephen Tsai on January 30, 2015

A local radio host declared the tiresome “Deflate-gate” will be put to rest, finally, because the officials did not mark the pre-game air pressures of New England’s 11 below-pressure footballs. That’s the same logic I use when I tell the District Court judge I wasn’t speeding because the police officer didn’t fill all the blanks on my ticket. I’ll also argue that everybody else was going the same speed and, besides, the speed limit should never be that low for […]

Family matters

While Kawika Borden awaits word on whether he gets a sixth UH season and Iolani senior Kamuela Borden prepares to sign with UH before going on a church mission, a third Borden brother projects to play for the Warriors this season. Noah Borden, who played basketball and football at Kamehameha, has served a church mission in Las Vegas the past two years. His mission ends in March, and tentative plans call for him to join the Warriors as a walk-on. […]

By Stephen Tsai on January 28, 2015

Fifty-five Warriors had GPAs of 3.0 or better this past semester. The quarterbacks were the highest-ranking position, with an average GPA of 3.26. Among the top scorers were walk-on running back Jason Muraoka (3.69), left tackle Ben Clarke (3.56) and tight end Harold Moleni (3.60).

RB overcomes adversity

By Stephen Tsai on January 27, 2015

It was a difficult 13-month period for the football player who wore jersey No. 13. Kamehameha’s Kaulana Apelu was set to be the starting running back in 2013 after averaging 6.4 yards per carry as a sophomore. But he suffered a season-ending ACL injury in the 2013 opener. A few months later, his father died. After making a full recovery, Apelu suffered another season-ending ACL injury in the 2014 opener against Del Oro. He had rushed 10 times for 79 […]

UH recruiting numbers: 7 and 11

By Stephen Tsai on January 26, 2015

The Warriors brought in seven players on recruiting visits this past weekend. Three had committed before arriving on the island. One committed on Saturday. Three did not receive offers … yet. This weekend, the final one before the Feb. 4 signing day, the Warriors are bringing in 11 recruits. * * * * * The volleyball Warriors had a fund-raiser/banquet last night in the Stan Sheriff Center. Colton Goeas to transfer to UH

By Stephen Tsai on January 25, 2015

Colton Goeas — a Saint Louis School graduate and son of former NFL player Leo Goeas — is transferring from Kansas to UH. Goeas, who is 6 feet 2 and 240 pounds, was the backup to inside linebacker Ben Heeney, the past season. Goeas redshirted in 2013. Goeas will redshirt in 2015 as a condition of transferring. After that, he will have two years to play two UH seasons. There is a possibility Goeas could be as a running back, […]

By Stephen Tsai on January 24, 2015

Santa Monica College cornerback Dejaun Butler told us he has accepted a scholarship from the Warriors. Here’s our on-line story: Butler joins UH There will be a full story/interview in Sunday’s Star-Advertiser. * * * * * Somebody forgot to tell Daniel Masifilo to stop dreaming. Six years ago, Masifilo, a Campbell High graduate, had a dream about playing college football. He went to Mount San Antonio College, a JC powerhouse, then to Arizona State. The NCAA noted 6.5 percent […]
