Safety first

By Stephen Tsai on June 3, 2017

The safety positions have drawn much well-deserved praise this offseason. Trayvon Henderson has developed into one of the Mountain West’s best safeties. Daniel Lewis, a mix of power and speed, has fully recovered from sports-hernia surgery. It appeared Keala Santiago made a pick a day in spring training. And Jay Dominique took advantage of his mid-year enrollment to make an impact in spring ball. But this year’s sleeper might be last year’s sleeper. Kalen Hicks has been on restricted workouts […]

Board needs to get on board

By Stephen Tsai on June 2, 2017

The UH Board of Regents consists of some of Hawaii’s brightest and most successful citizens. There’s no doubt about their care and commitment to the state’s only public university. But it seems every BOR meeting involves a tsk-tsk report on how the athletic department just isn’t earning enough money. Hey, I get it. I’ve been a landlord whose heard the most emotional dog-ate-my-paycheck stories from tenants. To paraphrase BBD, times are getting kinda hard on the boulevard. Here’s a thought: […]

Bear market: Cal coaches join UH camp

By Stephen Tsai on June 1, 2017

California coaches are the latest to be added as instructors at the UH’s Elite Camp on June 9-10 on the Manoa campus. The Bears join UH, USC, Utah and Washington as the coaching faculty for high-school-aged players. This is Hawaii’s only football camp for that age group involving Division coaches this year. The NCAA limits Division I coaches to 10 days of participating in camps held on an NCAA member’s campus or playing site. The UH coaches will attend camps […]

Thomas wins Big West freshman honor

By Stephen Tsai on May 31, 2017

A year ago, Dylan Thomas struggled with his pitch command, leading to being redshirted in 2016. Thomas conquered his control and season-long back issues to convert all nine of his save opportunities this season. Today, Thomas was named the Big West Conference’s freshman pitcher of the year. “It’s a huge honor to wake up to that,” said Thomas, who was awakened from a nap to learn of the award. Thomas had a 2.01 earned-run average in 17 appearances. Starting pitcher […]

Saint Louis QB chooses Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on May 30, 2017

Saint Louis School quarterback Chevan Cordeiro has made a verbal commitment to play for the Warriors in 2018, Crusaders coach Cal Lee confirmed today. Lee said Cordeiro, who will be a senior this coming academic year, told the UH coaches he will accept a 2018 scholarship. Cordeiro was the primary understudy to Tua Tagovailoa the past two seasons. Tagovaiola enrolled at Alabama in January and competed in the Crimson Tide’s spring practice this past semester. “He probably could have started […]

Rogers signs with CFL’s Alouettes

By Stephen Tsai on May 29, 2017

Tres bien. Former Warrior defensive back Jalen Rogers said he has signed with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. It is a standard 1-and-1 contract: a one-year deal with an option for a second year. According to the CFL’s collective bargaining agreement, the minimum salary is $53,000. (The average CFL salary is $80,000.) Rogers’versatility is suited for a sport that employs 12 players on defense. Rogers started at cornerback last season but also has played safety, nickelback and […]

Other end of the Spectrum

By Stephen Tsai on May 28, 2017

Last night’s game was the end of the baseball season, UH’s 2016-2017 sports schedule and telecasts under the OC Sports label. When UH sportscasts return — perhaps with the Aug. 26 game against UMass? — they will be shown on Spectrum Sports. This is a result of the ownership changeover from Oceanic. The same on-air talent will return, as well as the unsung production crew. While you were lazing on the La-Z-Boy last night, there were 30 people working on […]

Tago won’t be rejoining Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on May 27, 2017

Defensive end Jamie Tago will not be rejoining the Warriors this coming season. Tago did not meet the requirements for reinstatement. Tago, who transferred from Garden City (Kan.) College in January, was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules in February. He needed to meet certain conditions for reinstatement. Tago initially signed with UH in February 2014. He was with the Warriors in 2014 and 2015 but departed during the 2016 spring semester because of non-football circumstances. He played at Garden […]
