Congrats to Hawaii’s senior men’s volleyball player Stijn van Tilburg and junior women’s tennis player Petra Melounova. They will will be honored as the University of Hawaii’s recipients of the Big West Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. One male and one female student-athlete from each of the nine conference schools will be honored at a special banquet next Thursday at the Marriott Suites hotel in Garden Grove, Calif. The University of Hawaii women’s tennis team completed an undefeated run through the Big West regular-season schedule with a 4-0 win over Cal State Fullerton on Sunday in Fullerton, Calif. The Rainbow Wahine had clinched at least a share of the regular-season title and claimed its first Big West crown outright with Sunday’s sweep. The draw for the NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Championship was released on Tuesday and Rainbow Wahine sophomore Cindy Nguyen will face Clemson senior Beatrice Gumulya in the first round at 8 a.m. (Hawaii time) Wednesday at Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center. Nguyen, the Big West Player of the Year, is making her second appearance in the NCAA tournament ranked 95th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
