Rainbow Wahine add pitching depth with signing class

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 17, 2014

The Rainbow Wahine softball team’s latest recruiting class began to take shape before the signees could drive. The adulation over UH’s Women’s College World Series appearance in 2010 was still bubbling when Jennifer Iseri and Heather Cameron first reached out to UH coach Bob Coolen — as eighth graders. “I was getting e-mails and messages from them and they were so excited,” Coolen recalled. Coolen said Naomi Monahan also started following the Rainbow Wahine in the eighth grade and, like Iseri and […]

Li’ili’i, Morales lead Wahine power surge

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 8, 2014

Leisha Li’ili’i said Rainbow Wahine softball coach Bob Coolen is trying to get her to “step out of her comfort zone” in taking a more vocal role as a senior leader this season. There’s no questioning her comfort level when she steps into the batter’s box. Li’ili’i went 7-for-8 at the plate in three games in the Kama‘aina Tournament and launched the second of UH’s five homers in a 16-1 win over Chaminade in the tournament finale on Saturday at […]

Strong starts for Rainbow Wahine pitchers

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 8, 2014

Kanani Aina Cabrales and Rachel Lack made striking first impressions to open the Rainbow Wahine softball team’s Kamaaina Tournament on Friday. Brittany Hitchcock followed with an effective re-introduction in the circle at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Aina Cabrales struck out eight in a complete-game performance and Lack hit a leadoff home run in a 12-0 win over BYU-Hawaii in UH’s first game in the exhibition tournament. Hitchcock, who last pitched in a game in last year’s fall tournament, also went […]

Softball: Rainbow Wahine open fall practice

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 13, 2014

Heavy droplets of rain chased the Rainbow Wahine softball team into the dugout for a few minutes Monday afternoon … just as Bob Coolen expected. The Hawaii head coach noted that a Manoa shower had accompanied opening day of fall practice for most of his 25 years in the program and the first on-field session leading into the 2015 season held to form. The rain accentuated the sense of renewal for a UH team looking to wash away a 22-28 […]

Softball schedule released

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 9, 2014

The college softball season is a little less than four months away, but Hawaii coach Bob Coolen has already scored a victory of sorts. Since returning to the Big West in 2013, the Rainbow Wahine played Friday-Saturday conference series at home and Saturday-Sunday series on the road. This season, all of UH’s Big West series will be on Fridays and Saturdays, home and away. Coolen had lobbied for the change and the adjustment is subtle yet significant for the Wahine […]
