By Stephen Tsai on June 12, 2018

Jackson Rees, who was the baseball ‘Bows’ top starting pitcher this past season, has reached agreement on a minor-league, free-agent contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. Rees told the Warrior Beat he will report today to the Jays’ minor-league headquarters in Florida. He is expected to pitch for Toronto’s rookie-level team, the Gulf Coast League Blue Jays. It appeared Rees would return to UH for his senior season after not being selected in last week’s Major League Baseball First-Year Player […]

CFL teams cut Owens, Moniz

By Stephen Tsai on June 11, 2018

Oh, what the heck, Canada? The pro careers of receiver/returner Chad Owens and quarterback Bryant Moniz are on hiatus after the former Warriors failed to make Canadian Football League rosters this past weekend. The Saskatchewan Roughriders cut Owens and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats released Moniz. Owens, who was limited to three games last year, did not play in the Roughriders’ final preseason game after reportedly suffering a shoulder injury. Even at 36, Owens still is fit enough for another couple seasons. […]

By Stephen Tsai on June 9, 2018

The Warriors received their first commitment for the 2019 class with Kaimana “Bubz” Wa‘a’s pledge. Here’s the skinny: > Homecoming: Wa‘a lived in Hau‘ula until he was 8. Then his family moved to Corvallis, Ore., to be closer to his uncle (his mom’s brother) Jeremy Perry, an offensive lineman for the Beavers. Wa‘a will be a senior this fall at Crescent Valley High — known as “CV” — in Corvallis. Wa‘a has family — lots of family — on the […]

Retirement shouldn’t end storytelling

By Stephen Tsai on June 5, 2018

Few were better than Jim Leahey in providing narration of a sporting event. His commentary entertained, informed and, sometimes, provoked. His viewers/listeners were enraptured with stories that transcended generations, often told with a wink and sometimes with words originating from a thesaurus’ deepest reach. For decades, a UH telecast was like watching a game with Uncle Kimo. It seemed he was speaking directly to you, even though he was in a press box or at courtside. But for all his […]

Former UH QB hosts free camp

By Stephen Tsai on June 4, 2018

High school-aged quarterbacks and receivers (or students interested in the passing game) are invited to participate in the 2018 Under the Lights clinic. The event is from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, June 15, at Aloha Stadium. Each participant will receive instruction from prominent coaches, including passing guru Vince Passas, as well as a shirt. The cost? Zero. Nada. Nothing. It’s free, thanks to organizer Sean Schroeder, a former UH quarterback. Schroeder’s not-for-profit organization, 808 Passing Academy, is […]
