Colt is in the house

By Stephen Tsai on August 2, 2018

The man, the myth, the legend — Colt Brennan — attended today’s UH football practice. He also delivered an inspiring pre-practice speech to the Warriors. Brennan had been hospitalized for several months because of a blood clot in his spine. But he appears to be healthier. And the young Warriors, many of whom are at UH because they watched Brennan and company, were happy to meet the 2007 Heisman finalist.

Day 5 practice … remembering Manny Relator

By Stephen Tsai on August 1, 2018

There were mixed results for the Warriors’ fifth practice of training camp. Quarterbacks Jeremy Moussa, Chevan Cordeiro, Cole McDonald and Kolney Cassel took turns in situational and scrimmage-like sessions. Moussa, a freshman, directed the only scoring drive. He completed a 56-yard pass to JoJo Ward to set up a 17-yard TD strike to a leaping Devan Stubblefield. “In the huddle, they were expecting the ball coming my way,” Ward recalled. “We had a connection coming my way.” In the past […]

VIDEO: Walk-on QB makes most of his reps

By Dave Reardon on July 31, 2018

Like several of the other University of Hawaii quarterbacks in camp, Justin Uahinui is learning his third offensive system in as many years. The second-year freshman walk-on from Farrington played in a version of the West Coast offense as a Govs senior and learned the RPO (run-pass option) last year at UH. Now, it’s the run-and-shoot. “We were run-heavy (in high school),” he said. “A lot of people were surprised I continued at quarterback (in college), but I get a […]

Practice No. 4

By Stephen Tsai on July 31, 2018

Stop right there. The Warriors used three quarterbacks in the team session. But the order (Jeremy Moussa, Chevan Cordeiro and then Cole McDonald) and the rotation number are not a reflection of the depth chart or separation. Nick Rolovich said no decision has been reached on a pecking order. All the quarterbacks remain in the running. * * * * * After years of instability, UH installed concrete bases for the video lifts. Here’s a recent photo gallery from camp. […]

Kick-starting special teams

By Brian McInnis on July 30, 2018

Competition has been kicked up a notch out at Cooke Field. UH, which no longer had a do-it-all leg maestro like Rigo Sanchez in 2017, posted a kickoff distance average of 57.7 yards, compared to 62.2 for opponents. UH made four field goals all season, in nine attempts. This fall, UH has a whopping five players competing for the starting placekicker job: Ryan Meskell (Jr.); Michael Boyle (RFr.); Alex Trifonovitch (Jr.); Nino Alibegic (Jr.); and Kekoa Sasaoka (So.). New special […]
