Warrior Beat: Keene observation

By Stephen Tsai on September 4, 2018

As Navy set up to punt, Hawaii’s Jeffrey Keene moved side to side, eyeing an opening into the backfield. Then Keene burst through the middle, and blocked Owen White‘s punt just inches after it exited his shoe. Defensive end Max Hendrie scooped the football and raced 19 yards to the end zone for a 28-0 lead. “I just saw an opening and took it,” Keene said following this morning’s two-hour practice on the grass field. Keene said the play was […]

Warrior Beat: McDonald wins MWC weekly award

By Stephen Tsai on September 3, 2018

It took 78 games, but the Warriors finally have a winner of the Mountain West’s Offensive Player of the Week award. Quarterback Cole McDonald, a third-year sophomore from La Mirada, Calif., earned the honor after completing 30 of 41 passes for 428 yards and six touchdowns in a 59-41 victory over Navy this past Saturday. There were four drops. The Warriors joined the Mountain West as a football affiliate in 2012 after 33 seasons in the Western Athletic Conference. Since […]

Warrior Beat: A statement-making win

By Stephen Tsai on September 2, 2018

The Warriors had just put away Navy, 59-41 and the doom-and-gloomers were doing their dooming and glooming. “They started 2-0 last year, too,” they gloomed. Well, last year was different because the Warriors’ first two 2018 opponents (Colorado State and Navy) are way better than last year’s opening twosome (UMass and Western Carolina). And next week’s game is at home against Rice. Last year’s third game was at a little place called the Rose Bowl against UCLA (and its NFL […]

McDonald, Warriors serve up happy meal for Hawaii fans

By Dave Reardon on September 1, 2018

After two games, Hawaii’s offense has generated 1,139 yards and UH has scored 102 total points in victories at Colorado State and, tonight, its home-opener against Navy, 59-41. Those are some numbers that might even spin the head of business major Cole McDonald, who says, “I like accounting.” McDonald is also the UH quarterback who completed 30-of-41 passes for 428 yards and six touchdowns tonight. It was a sweet encore for McDonald and the Warriors after their season-opening conference road […]

Warrior Beat: UH-Navy tracker

By Stephen Tsai on September 1, 2018

I have attention … uh, attention-deficit problems, so this may or may not work out. But for now the plan is to do in-game updates. We can interact, too. You also can follow or direct message me at: Tsai’s twitter * * * * * Cole McDonald and JoJo Ward team on a 75-yard scoring pass to extend Hawaii’s lead to 52-35. * * * * * * Malcolm Perry’s third pass of the game — fifth of his career […]

Football Throwbacks: Navy

By Brian McInnis on September 1, 2018

Hawaii and today’s opponent, Navy, don’t have the deepest history. UH leads the head-to-head series 2-1. But one of those three meetings — the first — possessed plenty of significance beyond the Maryland-based service academy’s ties with the islands’ strong military presence. UH, under first-year coach June Jones, was in the process of putting together what was then the biggest turnaround season in NCAA football history. This meeting with the Midshipmen at Aloha Stadium on Nov. 20, 1999, came after the Rainbow […]

Football Q&As: The Byrd is the word

By Brian McInnis on August 31, 2018

Cole McDonald’s sublime debut as Hawaii football starting quarterback had a way of sucking the oxygen out of the room, whether you were at the 5,000-foot altitude of Fort Collins or in your living room at sea level on Oahu. And yet, receiver Cedric Byrd, making his UH debut out of Long Beach City College, had plenty of room to breathe. Byrd caught 11 balls for 181 yards — including a 55-yard touchdown pass — in UH’s 43-34 stunner at […]

Warrior Beat: Trayvon injured … basketball team refreshed

By Stephen Tsai on August 31, 2018

It was tough break for former UH safety Trayvon Henderson. He was expected to make the Cincinnati Bengals’ 53-player, opening-day roster. But Henderson, who signed with the Bengals as a free agent, suffered what was diagnosed as a torn ACL, his representatives told the Warrior Beat. Henderson is expected to be placed on injury reserve. * * * * * One of the things the basketball ‘Bows do well is celebrate birthdays. Yesterday, they sang and ate brownies in honor […]
