Warrior Beat: Paniolo pride

By Stephen Tsai on October 2, 2018

The Wyoming football team is set to arrive late Thursday afternoon with 70 players and a prized possession — the Paniolo Trophy. Like Magnum P.I., this trophy is not the original. The one that was awarded between 1979 and 1997, when both teams were members of the Western Athletic Conference, was misplaced. But, hey, who’s going to notice? The Warriors have other goals entering Saturday’s Mountain West Conference game. The Warriors are 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the MW. They […]

VIDEO: Rainbow Warriors prepare for Wyoming

The Paniolo Trophy is on the line at Aloha Stadium on Saturday when Wyoming comes to town to face Hawaii. The Rainbow Warriors (5-1, 2-0 Mountain West) are coming off an emotional, five-overtime 44-41 win at San Jose State. Wyoming, a power-running team, is 2-3 and 0-1 in the Mountain West, but has faced some very tough competition, losing to Washington State (4-1), Missouri (3-1) and Boise State (3-1). UH coach Nick Rolovich and running back Fred Holly III gave […]

Crunching numbers: OT success a good omen for UH

By Dave Reardon on October 1, 2018

Perhaps you think it is a cliche when it is talked about how good teams “know how to win” or “find a way to win” close games. But if we take a look at the University of Hawaii football team’s history when it comes to the closest of close games — those that go to overtime, there may be something to be said for that. Since overtime was instituted at the beginning of the 1996 season, UH is 9-5 in […]

Meskell named MW specialist of the week

By Stephen Tsai on October 1, 2018

Ryan Meskell, who kicked the game-winning field goal in the Warriors’ 44-41 victory over San Jose State, has been named the Mountain West’s special teams player of the week. Meskell connected on the decisive 35-yard field goal in the fifth overtime of the longest game in MW history. Meskell, a junior from Australia, also made field goals from 25 and 35 yards.

Warrior Beat: “It’s for the state”

By Stephen Tsai on September 30, 2018

The close games … the overtime battle in San Jose … the “believe” mantra … for Warrior followers, it’s starting to have an ’06-’07 vibe. Running back Dayton Furuta‘s gritty performance after not practicing the past week is a good story. Ryan Meskell‘s redemption from two missed field goals and a hooked PAT to what proved to be the game-winning 3-pointer is a better story. Asked what it was like to be a hero, Meskell said: “I’m not the hero. […]

‘Bows outlast Spartans in 5OT classic

By Warrior World on September 29, 2018

It had a little bit of everything. Elation. Deflation. And, after the longest game in Hawaii football history — five overtimes — the Rainbow Warriors finally defeated San Jose State, 44-41, at CEFCU Stadium on Saturday night. UH (5-1 overall, 2-0 Mountain West) survived a conference road game for the second time this season. The previous longest game for UH football in terms of overtime periods was the triple-OT win over Houston in the 2003 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl. After two missed […]

Football Throwbacks: San Jose State

By Brian McInnis on September 29, 2018

For this week’s entry in the “Football Throwbacks” series, we’re going ALL the way back to the time of leather helmets, the Fighting Deans and the old Honolulu Stadium. The year is 1936. The coach is Otto “Proc” Klum. And the Hawaii Fighting Deans, after a series of games against local alumni of McKinley and Kamehameha, were about to play their first collegiate opponent of the year. That opponent was San Jose State — today’s foe for UH as Mountain West […]
