Healthy McDonald returns to practice

By Stephen Tsai on October 9, 2018

The leader of the Warriors’ offense – quarterback Cole McDonald — practiced today after missing Saturday’s game because of an undisclosed injury. “I’m back,” McDonald said following a 2-hour practice in which he easily threw a variety of passes. McDonald said it was a game-time decision to not play. Warrior Beat: “A true team win”

By Stephen Tsai on October 7, 2018

When it was time to roll the credits on the Warriors’ 17-13 comeback victory over Wyoming, everyone’s name was called. “It felt like a true team win,” wideout Marcus Armstrong-Brown said. “Usually before, you could point to one side of the ball, offense or defense, but we came together collectively.” In particular: > Nick Rolovich: The recent trend against the Warriors’ run-and-shoot/run-pass option hybrid is to place five in the tackle box — 3-2 or 4-1 front — and drop […]

Warriors find a way to win

By Dave Reardon on October 6, 2018

A football game can be ugly for 59 minutes and just one pretty play can turn it into a thing of beauty. And so it was for the University of Hawaii tonight at Aloha Stadium, when true freshman quarterback Chevan Cordeiro stepped out of a sack, kept his balance and then found JoJo Ward in the end zone with 1:26 left for a 38-yard touchdown pass. It was Hawaii’s first lead of the game, and the only one it needed […]

Football Throwbacks: Wyoming

By Brian McInnis on October 6, 2018

The Paniolo Trophy is up for grabs today between two old WAC foes. In that spirit, we’re taking today’s “Football Throwbacks” entry back into the thick of the WAC battles between the Rainbows and the Cowboys, a series that began in 1978 and was played every year through 1997 — a 20-year span. Wyoming has won six of the last seven meetings going back to 1993. The Cowboys are 2-1 against UH as Mountain West foes, with both of those wins […]

Warrior Beat: It’s go time.

By Stephen Tsai on October 4, 2018

Saturday’s game — actually, halftime of Saturday’s game — is the halfway point of the Warriors’ 13-game regular season. With Wyoming as another rugged opponent, head coach Nick Rolovich is hoping that several developing players, particularly on the defensive line, will be ready if needed. “You want to make sure you’re still growing your roster as far as developing your players and getting them ready,” Rolovich said following today’s two-hour workout. “This is the time when guys have to start […]

Warrior Beat: Loss leader

By Stephen Tsai on October 3, 2018

Two fun facts about rush end Kaimana Padello: > Seven of his 11 tackles have been for lost yardage. > He played all 86 defensive snaps in the quintuple-overtime victory over San Jose State. “He’s the hardest worker on the team,” said Jacob Yoro, who coaches the rush ends. “I don’t think anybody can argue that.”

Football Q&As: Ikem Okeke

By Brian McInnis on October 3, 2018

Hawaii safety Ikem Okeke has a good feeling. The former Bishop Gorman (Nev.) player bounced around several positions over his playing career but has settled in at free safety, where he’s been a mainstay of the Rainbow Warriors’ defense. UH (5-1, 2-0 Mountain West) has never been 3-0 in conference play since joining the MWC in 2012, but that can change this weekend with a strong showing against Wyoming (2-3, 0-1). Okeke gave some of his time after Wednesday’s morning […]
