‘Bows eke out rare win at San Diego State

By Brian McInnis on November 24, 2018

How about that? For the first time since 1989, Hawaii football beat San Diego State in a conference game. And for the first time since 1988, the Rainbow Warriors did it in San Diego. A dramatic game of see-sawed emotions ended with UH topping the Aztecs 31-30 in overtime when backup quarterback Ryan Agnew’s fade-route pass attempt went long on a 2-point conversion. Football Throwbacks: San Diego State

By Brian McInnis on November 24, 2018

You can’t do a Hawaii-San Diego State “Football Throwbacks” entry without acknowledging the existence of one Marshall William Faulk. So, sorry Rainbow Warriors fans, this week’s submission might be painful — much like the UH-SDSU series as a whole. The Aztecs, who absolutely dominated the Rainbows in the 1990s WAC (winning nine straight from 1990 to 1998), have also gotten the better of the ‘Bows in the Mountain West, having won all six meetings there thanks to a seemingly nonstop procession […]

Warrior Beat: Warriors depart for final trip of season

By Stephen Tsai on November 22, 2018

The Warriors observed the four Fs today — football, family, friends and food. Following today’s 90-minute walk-through session, the Warriors feasted on a turkey brunch. They then departed to the airport for their scheduled afternoon flight to San Diego in advance of Saturday’s game against the Aztecs. The Warriors are expected to arrive in San Diego late tonight. A heavier practice is scheduled for tomorrow. Meanwhile, a two-hour drive away, the UH basketball team faces Utah tonight in the opening […]

Warrior Beat: Cordeiro snubbed?

By Stephen Tsai on November 19, 2018

The Mountain West’s offensive player of the week is a backup quarterback who came off the sideline to lead his team from a double-digit, fourth-quarter deficit. Congrats to … Wyoming’s Tyler Vander Waal? Wait. What? Like those similar-themed movies that are released at the same time, Vander Waal and Chevan Cordeiro have a nearly identical storyline. Similar but not the same. > Change: Vander Waal replaced starter Sean Chambers, who was injured in the first series of the game. Cordeiro […]

Warrior Beat: “Stone-cold … gamer”

By Stephen Tsai on November 18, 2018

When asked to describe freshman quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, pass-game coordinator Craig Stutzmann said: “He’s a great kid. He’s got magic. He’s just a stone-cold frickin’ gamer.” * * * * * OK, we know the situation. A player can redshirt if he does not play in more than four games in that season. Cordeiro has played in three games. There are two games remaining — the regular-season finale against San Diego State and the bowl game. Play him or don’t […]

Cordeiro does it again. Should he start?

By Dave Reardon on November 17, 2018

The University of Hawaii football team just completed one of the more stirring comeback victories in recent memory, and with a lot on the line. Led by a dominant second-half defense and true freshman Chevan Cordeiro‘s three touchdown passes in less than one quarter of play, UH beat UNLV 35-28 and clinched a berth in the Hawaii Bowl. The Rebels led 21-6 at halftime and it was 28-13 when Cordeiro replaced third-year sophomore Cole McDonald with about 12 minutes left […]

Game Night: Hawaii vs. UNLV

By Stephen Tsai on November 17, 2018

Behind Chevan Cordeiro, Hawaii scores 21 points in a row to defeat UNLV, 35-28, and clinch a berth in the Hawaii Bowl. * * * * * In what is becoming the Miracle of Salt Lake Boulevard, Chevan Cordeiro throws his third TD (in three possessions) to boost UH to a 35-28 lead with 1:25 to play. This time, Cordeiro goes 68 to John Ursua. The Warriors have scored 22 points in a row since Cordeiro entered. * * * […]
