As I look at today’s Hawaii-Oregon State football matchup 6 1/2 hours before kickoff, one key to the outcome stands out above all others: The Beavers offensive front against Hawaii’s defense. OSU’s O-line, coached by Mike Cavanaugh the former UH assistant, is young. And in OSU’s 29-14 season-opening victory over Portland State last week, it was fairly porous, allowing three sacks. The Hawaii defense’s collective effort last week was epitomized in one of the highlight individual moments of the night. UH linebacker Simon Poti recorded the Rainbow Warriors’ first sack of the season when he chased down Washington quarterback Jeff Lindquist for a 16-yard loss in the fourth quarter of UH’s opener. The “We Get ‘Em” grassroots fundraising effort for University of Hawaii athletics is off to a fine start, with contributions coming in at wegetemhawaii.com to the tune of 46 donations for a total of $2,406 after less than one day.
