Crisp practice for the Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on September 6, 2017

The Warriors were clicking during today’s practice. (My car’s back tire, not so much, thanks to road work on the Pali. But I digress.) The Warriors went for 2 hours today, focusing mostly on dealing with UCLA’s concepts. Most of the drills were between the top units and the scouts. Nick Rolovich has addressed the issues with penalties and self-discipline, although he said the proof will be during the game. I apologize for the short post, but I have to […]

AP poll, after week one

By Dave Reardon on September 5, 2017

Here’s how I voted after the first full week of college football. For the complete AP poll, go here. 1. Alabama (1-0, beat Florida State 24-7) The Tide got off to a sluggish start against Florida State, but should have no problem with that other FSU visiting from California this week (the Bulldogs won 66-0, but it was against Incarnate Word. 2. Clemson (1-0, beat Kent State 56-3) The defending champs showed they can still score without DeShaun Watson. We […]

Bruin reunion

By Stephen Tsai on September 5, 2017

It will a homecoming of sorts when the Warriors travel to L.A. to play UCLA this Saturday. Offensive lineman Fred Ulu-Perry, of course, started his college career in Westwood. He said he enjoyed his time there and made friends, but that Hawaii was a better fit. He transferred to UH in January 2016. Cornerback Zach Wilson also was recruited by the Bruins. Instead, he attended Mount San Antonio College as a part-time student for the 2015 fall semester before enrolling […]

Going to market

By Stephen Tsai on September 4, 2017

It was amusing when the social leader of a fraternity mistook Nick Rolovich for being a marketing rep for UH. Story: Rolovich, students work together But since being named head coach in November 2015, Rolovich has done what marketing people are supposed to do: concoct slogans (“Pride Rock,” “Live aloha, play Warrior”), create a buzz (dropping off tickets with fans, asking police officers to distribute UH posters), and just connecting with fans. A year ago, I told Rolovich about a […]

Warriors enjoying 2-0 start

By Stephen Tsai on September 3, 2017

No, it was not a “pretty” win. Then again, it wasn’t supposed to be artistry. Football is rough, unpredictable and 3 hours of punches, counter punches, and counter-counter punches. For the Warriors, here are the good things: > The Warriors are 2-0 for the first time since 2009, when they opened with victories against Central Arkansas and Washington State. It was in that road win in Pullman that Nick Rolovich and Dave Aranda were handed the keys to the offense […]

Another bittersweet win for UH football

By Dave Reardon on September 2, 2017

For the second week in a row, Hawaii football coach Nick Rolovich was not overjoyed with some significant elements of his team’s performance, although the Rainbow Warriors won. UH dominated in its home opener 41-18 over Western Carolina on Saturday at Aloha Stadium, as Diocemy Saint Juste rushed for 202 yards and the the Warriors benefited from three blocked field goal tries by the Catamounts. But this was a team the Rainbows should’ve put away early instead of allowing to […]

Game day: Western Carolina

By Stephen Tsai on September 2, 2017

It’s the home opener for the Warriors. Because of a glitch there won’t be a new intro video, and there might be rosters but not programs. Other than that, Isa‘ako “Isaac” Sopoaga will be the honorary UH captain, everybody is relatively healthy, and the Warriors are seeking their fifth consecutive victory. The Catamounts, meanwhile, are seeking their first victory against an FBS team. Period. They’ve never had one in the program’s history. To get an idea of what the Catamounts […]

Catamounts prepare for game

By Stephen Tsai on September 1, 2017

Following this morning’s practice at Aloha Stadium, the Western Carolina football team went to Pearl Harbor for the Arizona Memorial tour. “I think that’s important for our players,” coach Mark Speir said of the visit. The emphasis has been on football since the Catamounts’ arrival yesterday afternoon. But Speir said the return flight on Sunday afternoon will allow the players some beach time that morning. Meanwhile, it was Speir’s friendship with a college teammate that helped the Catamounts receive specially […]
