Highlights include home dates against North Carolina State and Texas in the Rainbow Wahine Showdown (Nov. 29-Dec.1) and a road trip to play Oregon State and Washington (Dec. 6 and […]

Hawaii football: Kaimana Padello gets a rush heading into Oregon State game

By Brian McInnis on September 4, 2019

Unlike a typical play in an opponent’s backfield, Kaimana Padello never had a chance. He never had a chance to watch his alma mater, Mililani High School, live in the stands at a football game in the time since he graduated in 2016. Until, that is, Hawaii’s bye on its schedule last week. The senior rush end took full advantage to go watch his Trojans take on Liberty High of Las Vegas last Friday while much of the rest of […]

Hawaii soccer: Mata, Wahine explore new frontier in Dakotas

By Brian McInnis on September 4, 2019

For the first four games of the Hawaii soccer season, goalkeeper Lex Mata has ventured to the four corners of the pipes and all space between. Mata, the newly minted Big West defensive player of the week, and her Rainbow Wahine teammates will now range far and wide together. UH (1-2-1) heads to the Dakotas for a groundbreaking three-game road trip spanning this week and next in the Central Time Zone. North and South Dakota are two states the program […]

Hawaii football: Cole McDonald not lacking for motivation against Oregon State

By Brian McInnis on September 3, 2019

Cole McDonald has nothing personal against Oregon State. He even has fond memories of some former members of the Hawaii coaching staff who now work in Corvallis. But come Saturday at Aloha Stadium, the Rainbow Warriors’ starting quarterback plans to hold nothing back. The opponent is immaterial to him. In Week Zero against Arizona, McDonald thrilled a national TV crowd with some freewheeling gunslinging, uncorking four touchdown passes to go with four interceptions. But with his fourth pick, coach Nick […]

AP College Football Poll: Week 1 produces little movement

By Dave Reardon on September 3, 2019

For the Top 25, it was a relatively unremarkable first week. Of course there was Jalen Hurts’ superb performance (508 yards of offense, three touchdowns passing and three MORE rushing) as No. 4 Oklahoma beat Houston 49-31 on Sunday. Only time will tell if the Alabama transfer can become the third consecutive Sooners quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy after Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray. After the first week, Hawaii’s Cedric Byrd is flying above the rest, with his 224 […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Chris Gerlufsen hired as assistant coach

By Stephen Tsai on September 3, 2019

The UH basketball team has filled a key position with the hiring of Chris Gerlufsen as assistant coach. Gerlufsen has worked for three Division I programs in the past two decades, including the last four seasons at the University of San Diego. > Gerelufsen replaces Adam Jacobsen, who resigned to accept an assistant coach’s job at Cal Baptist. Jacobsen was with the Rainbow Warriors for four years, including the NCAA Tournament run in 2015-16. Jacobsen served as associate head coach […]
