Rainbow Forecast: Hawaii football off, volleyball and soccer home for Big West

By Brian McInnis on September 30, 2019

Its duties accomplished for the moment, the Hawaii football team exits stage left to make way for the Rainbow Wahine volleyball and soccer squads in this week’s Rainbow Forecast. The Rainbow Warriors (4-1, 1-0 Mountain West) and newly minted Big West Offensive Player of the Week Cole McDonald get a well-deserved break this week coming off their emphatic 54-3 win over Nevada in Reno — and ensuing travel difficulties getting home. The bye could serve the Warriors well heading into […]

Congrats to Hanna Hellvig, another Freshman of Week honor. From the Big West: Hanna Hellvig claimed her second Women’s Volleyball Freshman of the Week award, leading No. 11 Hawai’i to a pair of wins over the weekend for a 2-0 start to conference play. Hellvig had a career-high tying 17 kills against Long Beach State. She added three blocks, two digs and and ace in the four-set victory. AP College Football Poll: More No. 1s than playoff spots

By Dave Reardon on September 30, 2019

That midnight train to Georgia picked up three passengers this week, and the Bulldogs didn’t even play a game. Fellow Associated Press pollsters Gene Henley (Chatanooga Times/Free Press), Nathan Baird (Cleveland.com) and Tom D’Angelo (The Palm Beach Post) joined me with UGA at the top of the ballot. Georgia’s win over Notre Dame is still the best win of the season, by anyone. But that’s just one butterfly effect aspect of Clemson’s 21-20 victory over North Carolina, salvaged only by […]

Hawaii football: The road more traveled

By Stephen Tsai on September 29, 2019

It appears it is easier for the Hawaii football team to win a road game than to return from one. Following a 54-3 trouncing of Nevada, a charter flight was delayed in taking the Warriors from Reno to San Francisco this morning. Then an hour into the Hawaiian Airlines flight to Honolulu, it was discovered there was an issue with the pressurizing system, according to a UH official. The official said passengers did not notice any adverse conditions during the […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: New-look ‘Bows take to new floor

By Brian McInnis on September 29, 2019

It was fitting that the 2019-20 Hawaii men’s basketball team got in its first practice of the season on a brand-new floor. There was a new theme in the lineup, a new assistant coach, and six new players on the roster to go with the sparkling court in the Stan Sheriff Center in the first full practice of the 2019-20 preseason on Saturday. Fifth-year coach Eran Ganot is going with a “go big or go home” theme to begin the […]

Hawaii football trounces Nevada in Reno

By Warrior World on September 28, 2019

On paper and in the skies, Saturday’s contest between Hawaii and Nevada in Reno did not have the makings of one of the most lopsided road victories in Rainbow Warriors program history. UH entered as a 2 1/2-point underdog. Then it started snowing in Reno a few hours before game time. That stopped — but a persistent, cold drizzle hung over Mackay Stadium all night. >> HAWAII VS. NEVADA PHOTO GALLERY Well, the Warriors shrugged all that off for a […]

Live football blog: Hawaii at Nevada

By Stephen Tsai on September 28, 2019

RENO >> Hawaii dominated every phase in a 54-3 clobbering of Nevada tonight at Mackay Stadium. The Warriors entered 1-8 in games played here. But Cole McDonald completed 83.3 percent of his passes with four TD and third-string quarterback Justin Uahinui finished the drubbing with the first scoring pass of his UH career. The Warriors also scored nine points on special teams. Andrew Choi’s block of a punt led to Justice Augafa’s scoop and score. A long snap sailed over […]

Hawaii Football Throwbacks: Nevada

By Brian McInnis on September 28, 2019

The elements — rain and chilly weather in altitude — were brought up more than once this week as Hawaii prepared to take on Nevada in the Rainbow Warriors’ Mountain West opener. Some of those factors have contributed to the Warriors’ struggles in Reno’s Mackay Stadium in the past — UH is 1-8 there all-time entering today’s ESPN2-televised contest (4:30 p.m. HST). In one meeting in particular, a meeting on Nov. 15, 2003, the elements seemed to get the better of the ‘Bows. […]
