Hawaii football: Jared Smart, UH look to make heady plays

By Dave Reardon on October 23, 2019

If he could, Jared Smart would trade every one of those 11 catches and 140 yards receiving Saturday for a win against Air Force. “No doubt, definitely,” said Smart, a 6-foot, 190-pound junior who posted career highs in the University of Hawaii’s 56-26 loss to the Falcons. The junior college transfer has 43 receptions for 417 yards and one touchdown in his first year at Manoa. But the Warriors might need similar production again from Smart if they are to […]

Hawaii women’s basketball: Rainbow Wahine picked fourth in Big West preseason polls

By Brian McInnis on October 23, 2019

Coaches and media around the Big West Conference expect the Hawaii women’s basketball team to be in the running for a conference championship this year, although the Rainbow Wahine are not seen as one of the favorites. UH (15-17, 10-6 Big West in 2018-19) was selected fourth in both the coaches and media preseason polls announced Wednesday. The Wahine garnered a first-place vote from someone in the media poll, while three-time defending regular-season champ UC Davis collected eight to be […]

Hawaii football: Opportunities arise with Stovall gone

By Brian McInnis on October 22, 2019

Slotback Melquise Stovall was one of Hawaii’s most productive players in blowout losses the last two weeks. The Rainbow Warriors hope they can find someone else to match that productivity in their coming games — ideally in victories. Stovall was dismissed from the team on Monday, UH announced, in the wake of an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the 56-26 loss to Air Force on Saturday. Head coach Nick Rolovich is looking for the next man up in the receiving corps for […]

Hawaii football: New Mexico suspends starting quarterback

By Ferd Lewis on October 22, 2019

For the third consecutive game the University of Hawaii will face an opponent’s backup quarterback. And, the Rainbow Warriors didn’t even have to knock the previous starter out of the game this time. Four days before it is scheduled to play the University of Hawaii, New Mexico announced today that it has suspended its starter, senior Sheriron Jones. Jone is suspended “indefinitely,” head coach Bob Davie said at today’s press conference in Albuquerque, N.M.,where the 2-5 Lobos (0-3 conference) play […]

Rainbow Forecast: Hawaii football regroups for New Mexico, volleyball heads back out, soccer has senior week

By Brian McInnis on October 21, 2019

Hawaii’s three primary fall sports — football, women’s volleyball, and soccer — are coming off drastically different outcomes heading into this week’s Forecast. The UH football team is reeling a bit coming off a 56-26 home loss to Air Force, and that was followed up by Monday’s news that receiver and return man Melquise Stovall was dismissed from the team. The Rainbow Warriors (4-3, 1-2 Mountain West) are at a pivotal moment of their season heading up to Albuquerque, N.M., as an […]

Warrior Beat: Melquise Stovall no longer on Hawaii football team

By Stephen Tsai on October 21, 2019

One of the Mountain West Conference’s top returners is no longer on the University of Hawaii football team. Head coach Nick Rolovich confirmed that Melquise Stovall, a fourth-year junior from Lancaster College, has been removed from the active roster. “There are certain expecatations required of a football student-athlete here at the University of Hawaii,” Rolovich said. “We hold all our student-athletes to these standards and expect them to represent our football program to the highest degree. We wish Melquise the […]

Hawaii women’s volleyball: Hanna Hellvig freshman of week, Wahine RPI 10, up to No. 21 in poll

By Cindy Luis on October 21, 2019

Congrats to Hanna Hellvig, the Big West Freshman of the Week. Hellvig claimed her third such honor after leading Hawaii to a pair of victories last week. The 6-foot-2 outside hitter had a team-leading 26 total kills for the week as the Rainbow Wahine swept UC Riverside and upended UC Davis in five sets on the 25th anniversary of the Stan Sheriff Center. Hellvig averaged 3.25 kills, 1.63 digs and 0.50 blocks per set. She has posted double-figure kills in […]

Hawaii women’s volleyball: Brooke Van Sickle rides to the rescue

By Brian McInnis on October 21, 2019

Brooke Van Sickle didn’t think she’d be playing over the weekend. The junior hitter only just returned to practice with her Hawaii teammates on Thursday from a knee injury that’d caused her to miss three matches heading into the week’s games against UC Riverside and UC Davis. She warmed up for Friday’s match against Riverside, but wasn’t needed, as the Rainbow Wahine made quick work of the lowly Highlanders despite not playing all that well. Sunday was a different story. […]
