Gameday: Cal State Northridge

By Brian McInnis on February 10, 2018

Before Wednesday, Hawaii had never lost four Big West games in a row. The Rainbow Warriors try to make sure that distinction stops AT four tonight. Cal State Northridge should provide UH (13-9, 4-5 BWC) another prime opportunity at stopping its losing streak. The Matadors (5-19, 2-8) have lost five straight themselves, and got blasted by the ‘Bows by 19 at the Matadome last month. UH is favored by 11.5 points tonight (UPDATE: That’s up to 13). CSUN is the […]

UH softball welcomes Josai to renovated RWSS

By Jason Kaneshiro on February 10, 2018

Some of the kinks inherent in a major renovation were still being worked out on Friday, but the University of Hawaii softball team remained eager for Sunday’s soft opening of its revamped ballpark. UH will christen Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium’s new playing surface with an exhibition doubleheader with Josai University of Tokyo starting at 1 p.m. Along with the opportunity to show off some of RWSS’s new features, the doubleheader will serve as a dress rehearsal for the Wahine before […]

Gameday: UC Riverside

By Brian McInnis on February 7, 2018

Guess which Big West team owns the longest active winning streak against Hawaii at the Stan Sheriff Center? That would be UC Riverside, tonight’s opponent. Improbably, the down-on-their-luck Highlanders (5-17, 0-8 BWC) look to make it three straight here against the Rainbow Warriors (13-8, 4-4), who’ve hit relative hard times themselves in the last week and a half, having lost three straight. UH is favored by 11. UCR, though, has been without its best player in Dikymbe Martin for the […]

Gameday: at Cal Poly

By Brian McInnis on February 3, 2018

To keep pace in the wild Big West, Hawaii must earn a split on its two-game road trip by taking one at Cal Poly today. The Rainbow Warriors prevailed in 57-45 in Honolulu last month, in a game only a mother could love (and maybe not even them). Don’t be surprised if it’s a similar contest at Mott Athletics Center, replete with body blows. UH (13-7, 4-3) is favored by four points over CP (7-15, 2-6). Tipoff is at 5 […]

Gameday: at UC Santa Barbara

By Brian McInnis on February 1, 2018

Round and round the Big West free for all goes. The BWC remains as tight as ever near the conference midpoint, with six teams at or within a half game of first place — UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine. Irvine helped muddle an already congested race on Wednesday, winning at the Pyramid. UH (13-6, 4-2) is tied in for fewest losses with Davis and UCSB heading into today’s 5 p.m. (HST) […]

Gameday: Cal State Fullerton

By Brian McInnis on January 27, 2018

Five in a row? That’s what the Hawaii basketball team must accomplish if it is to remain in first place in the Big West Conference after tonight. With Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara hovering just behind UH at two losses each, the Rainbow Warriors have to keep taking care of business at home to remain in the pole position coming up on the league halfway mark. UH (13-5, 4-1 BWC) should be back to full strength with Brocke […]

Wahine water polo opens with split

By Jason Kaneshiro on January 20, 2018

The sixth-ranked University of Hawaii water polo team opened the season by splitting matches with No. 4 California and No. 22 Loyola Marymount in the Rainbow Invite on Saturday at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.   California’s Anna Illes and Emma Wright scored three goals each to lead the Golden Bears to a 9-4 win over UH.  Cal led 3-0 in the second quarter before UH closed the gap on goals by Claire Nixon and Maartje Keuning. But Wright scored with […]

Gameday: UC Davis

By Brian McInnis on January 20, 2018

Hawaii will be without its most clutch shot-maker, guard Brocke Stepteau, for tonight’s pivotal Big West game against UC Davis. The winner will likely assume control of first place in the conference, if Long Beach State can hang on to a 17-point halftime lead at home and beat Cal State Fullerton. Stepteau, UH’s fourth-leading scorer at 9.9 ppg, is in street clothes recovering from the finger fracture on his right hand. He’s got the hand wrapped up nice and tight […]
