Gameday: at UC Davis

By Brian McInnis on March 1, 2018

UC Davis is in contention for a Big West regular-season title for two reasons. The Aggies have been dynamite at home; until recently they had a 19-game winning streak at the Pavilion, one of the longest in the country at the time. And they’ve been effective without their star, the suspended Chima Moneke, who’s expected to miss a seventh straight game tonight because of a team suspension. Per the Sacramento Bee, Chima Moneke will participate in UC Davis’ senior ceremonies […]

Rainbow Wahine face Cal in home opener

By Jason Kaneshiro on February 27, 2018

Aside from some last-minute details to check off, the renovated Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium is ready for its official debut. The Rainbow Wahine broke in the new field with an exhibition on Feb. 11 before embarking on a nearly two-week road trip. They returned to Manoa at 6-6 and open their first homestand on the turf by taking on No. 15 California on Wednesday. “Now watching the other teams come in and having a whole slate of games the next […]

Gameday: UC Irvine

By Brian McInnis on February 24, 2018

Hawaii can prove it has well and truly put its recent funk behind it by defeating first-place UC Irvine tonight in front of a “Whiteout” crowd at the Stan Sheriff Center. Fifth-place UH (16-10, 7-6 Big West) has won three straight since dropping five in a row, its worst Big West slide to date, just a couple of weeks ago. UCI (15-15, 10-4) needs a win tonight to keep pace ahead of UC Santa Barbara for the pole position they […]

UH comes up golden at MPSF championships

By Jason Kaneshiro on February 21, 2018

The last splash was the sweetest. The celebratory plunge into the pool at East Los Angeles College last Saturday again belonged to the University of Hawaii women’s swimming and diving team after the Rainbow Wahine collected medals and records to capture their second straight Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship and third in the last four years. “It’s a very demanding sport and there’s a lot that goes into it just to improve by 1/100th of a second or just one […]

Wahine take win streak to LMU

By Jason Kaneshiro on February 21, 2018

The Hawaii softball team’s week in Las Vegas couldn’t have started much worse. But the Rainbow Wahine managed to turn fortune in their favor and left town on Tuesday riding a hot streak. UH’s first season-opening road trip since 2002 began with a blowout loss to BYU on Feb. 15. The Wahine then blew a 2-0 lead in a 4-2 loss to Seattle in the first game of a doubleheader last Friday. “The first two games were really frustrating because […]

Gameday: at UC Riverside

By Brian McInnis on February 17, 2018

UPDATE: Forward Mike Thomas is out at Riverside today with an unspecified injury he incurred at UC Irvine. Not counting redshirt year of 2016-17, first game he’s missed since the 2014-15 season. How about that game on Thursday? Hawaii’s improbable one-point win at UC Irvine, in which UH sank only three field goals the entire second half, came courtesy of strong defense, rebounding, ball control, and exceptional free-throw shooting. (And some beneficial calls down the stretch.) Now the sixth-place Rainbow […]

Gameday: at UC Irvine

By Brian McInnis on February 15, 2018

Those seeking a reversal of fortune are generally not advised to play UC Irvine, especially at the Bren Events Center. Especially when the Anteaters have won five games in a row. That, however, is exactly the situation Hawaii (13-10, 4-6 BWC) finds itself in today. The Rainbow Warriors are 6.5-point underdogs in the building they lost by 28 in last season. They’ll look to surprise everyone — including their own fan base — by snapping their five-game slide and solidifying their […]

Finding some fire

By Brian McInnis on February 12, 2018

The week that was supposed to cure the Hawaii basketball team’s ills instead magnified them. UH found ways to continue its slide into unprecedented territory under third-year coach Eran Ganot, dropping home games to the eighth- and ninth-place teams in the conference, UC Riverside and Cal State Northridge. The Rainbow Warriors (13-10, 4-6 Big West) shot a season-low 33.3 percent in one, and allowed a season-high 65.1 percent in the other. They own their longest BWC losing streak of five. […]
