UH softball coming into focus

By Jason Kaneshiro on January 26, 2019

Experience matters, even on team picture day. The Rainbow Wahine softball team broke out the gameday uniforms last week Friday for the annual photo session prior to practice. Guided by the sports media relations staff, the Wahine made quick work of the process, leaving enough time for a few candids on their phones before getting changed for practice. The veteran nature of the roster has created similarly efficient practices as the Wahine work toward their Feb. 7 opener. “I think […]

Warrior Beat: Dylan Thomas to start opener

By Stephen Tsai on January 24, 2019

UH baseball coach Mike Trapasso announced that Dylan Thomas will be the Rainbow Warriors’ opening-night starting pitcher. Thomas, a fourth-year junior, led the Big West with 14 saves last season. He turned down an offer to sign with the Minnesota Twins this past summer to return to UH. In preseason training, Thomas has cross-trained as a starter and reliever. He is averaging 60 pitches a session and is on track to reach the 90-pitch threshold for starting pitchers entering the […]

Pivotal 2-week stretch on tap for Wahine

By Brian McInnis on January 24, 2019

UPDATE III: UH had a chance to build some serious momentum coming off its road sweep but instead came out flat against UC Riverside on Wednesday. The Highlanders built a 20-point lead behind Jannon Otto’s 22 points, but then the Rainbow Wahine rallied furiously to within three in the final seconds. Tia Kanoa’s long 3 to tie was just long and UCR pulled out the 60-55 win. UPDATE II: UH swept its two-game road trip with a 47-35 win at […]

Irvine pulls out another stunner

By Brian McInnis on January 23, 2019

The best thing about Wednesday night for Hawaii? The season goes on. Unlike UH’s bitter encounter with UC Irvine in the first round of the Big West tournament last March, the Rainbow Warriors will live to fight another day after a disheartening 75-74 overtime loss to the Anteaters at the Stan Sheriff Center. Here’s the final sequence of this tight @BigWestMBB battle — Max Hazzard with the go-ahead jumper for UC Irvine and the response that wouldn’t drop for #HawaiiMBB. […]

Game day: UH vs. UC Irvine

By Stephen Tsai on January 23, 2019

The Anteaters were sort of a party pooper for the ‘Bows last year. They ruined the ‘Bows’ senior night, then eliminated them from the Big West tournament. But even before that, the Anteaters were considered one of the league’s circle-the-calendar opponents. That should make for a feisty night in the Stan Sheriff Center. “They’re a contender to win the championship, and we want to be a contender, as well,” UH point guard Brocke Stepteau said. “It’s a great opportunity for […]

Warriors on the recruiting trail

By Stephen Tsai on January 22, 2019

Deep in the heart of Texas, UH coach Nick Rolovich is looking to fill some of the remaining spots of the 2019 recruiting class. There are about four assistant coaches working the islands, with the rest on the mainland. Defensive coordinator Corey Batoon has shuttled between California and Arizona. Coaches will be back in town this this Friday for the second weekend ahead of the Feb. 6 signing period.
