Avea takes his shot to Long Beach

Hawaii takes another shot at its first Big West men’s basketball victory at Long Beach State on Thursday. Tavai invited to Combine; Warriors add DL, DB

Former UH linebacker Jahlani Tavai said he has been invited to participate in the NFL Scouting Combine in March. Top officials — general managers, personnel directors, coaches — will be evaluating the participants in the invitation-only event in Indianapolis. Tavai, whose senior season was shortened because of a shoulder injury, is now physically fit. He has been training in San Diego. The 2019 season is nearly upon the Hawaii softball team. UH will likely be tested, and then some, in the opening couple days of the season. The Rainbow Wahine begin against Georgia State at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Hawaii Paradise Classic at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Congrats to G. Worsley, DPOW; Hawaii stays at No. 2

Gage Worsley earned his first career Big West Defensive Player of the Week award on Monday. The sophomore libero averaged 3.00 digs per set in the home series sweep of No. 8 Stanford. Worsley had a match-high 11 digs in the opener, a 25-15, 27-25, 25-22 win. He had seven digs in the 25-15, 25-18, 25-16 victory on Sunday. Jaylen Jasper reflects on island time

Even minutes after Stanford fell in straight sets to Hawaii for the second time in three nights, Cardinal opposite Jaylen Jasper was filled with appreciation, not disappointment. His perspective? It was a pretty cool trip for someone with his family history. Jasper is the son of two former Hawaii athletes, but had never visited the islands until arriving for this weekend’s games with his Cardinal teammates.
