Rainbow Wahine basketball puts rebuilt chemistry to test

By Brian McInnis on March 15, 2019

UPDATE: UH jumped out early and held on tight for a 66-58 win over UC Riverside in the Big West semifinals, setting up a title-game matchup with UC Davis at 12:30 p.m. (HST) on Saturday. ————— When forward Makenna Woodfolk announced she was done playing basketball for Hawaii five games ago, it sent a shock through the Rainbow Wahine program. For a team as up and down as the Rainbow Wahine were, even with their leading scorer and rebounder Woodfolk, […]

Rainbow baseball toes line between lucky and good

By Billy Hull on March 15, 2019

On it’s own it’s an incredible statistic. Only 17 games into the 2019 season, the Hawaii baseball team has already won five games when trailing after seven innings. It’s a mark that shows an ability to play all nine innings, battle to the very end and never give up. Those traits are obviously important to being a good team, but as Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso wisely said after Thursday’s 7-4 win over Cal State Bakersfield, it’s also an unsustainable method […]

Rainbow Wahine tennis comes ever so close to Indiana

By Brian McInnis on March 15, 2019

There’s close dual matches, and then there’s what happened for the Hawaii women’s tennis team against Indiana on Thursday. Of nine contested matches — six singles and three doubles — it came down to the last singles court in UH and IU’s competition at the UH Tennis Complex. Then, it came down to the last set on that No. 6 court between UH’s Alzbeta Houbova and IU’s Somer Henry. And, because the tension wasn’t apparently high enough, it then went to […]

Game Night: ‘Bows vs. 49ers

By Stephen Tsai on March 14, 2019

It’s game night with fourth-seeded UH and No. 5 Long Beach State meeting in the opening round of the Big West tournament. The Rainbow Warriors are at ease in Orange County with this being their 10th day on the road. With their final regular-season game against Cal State Fullerton, the ‘Bows did not even have to change hotels. Eran Ganot said it was one of the rare Sundays on the road not spent in an airport or on an airplane. […]

Rainbow Wahine basketball draws UC Riverside

By Brian McInnis on March 13, 2019

The Hawaii women’s basketball team finally learned the identity of its Big West tournament semifinal opponent. Second-seeded UH will meet third-seeded UC Riverside at 11:30 a.m. (HST) Friday at the Honda Center. That was sealed when the Highlanders defeated Long Beach State 67-50 at UC Irvine Wednesday afternoon. UH has been practicing at Cal State Fullerton and Fullerton College in an attempt to stay sharp through its double bye earned last week with two key road wins at Riverside and […]

Rainbow Wahine tennis: Melounova makes it work

By Brian McInnis on March 13, 2019

The challenges have been large and small, personal and public, academic and athletic. But Petra Melounova is a problem solver. Always has been. The Hawaii women’s tennis star from the Czech Republic is having another stellar season in 2019. It’s difficult to top Big West player of the year status in your first two seasons of college, but what Melounova is doing this year might be her most impressive solution yet. A persistent shoulder injury on the junior’s right (dominant) […]

Yet another busy week, just add water (polo)

By Jason Kaneshiro on March 12, 2019

And you thought last week was busy around UH’s lower campus. While the UH basketball teams begin their runs in the Big West tournament in California (the men on Thursday and the women on Friday), the on-campus schedule remains packed, including visits by the No. 1 ranked water polo team and the lone undefeated team remaining in Division I softball. The fifth-ranked Rainbow Wahine water polo team (12-3) returns to the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex for its first home match […]
