Let there be peace

By Brian McInnis on February 21, 2011

Good news — diplomacy prevailed. After a meeting between Hawaii coach Gib Arnold and sophomore forward Joston Thomas this afternoon, it was decided that Thomas will return to play with the team starting at practice tomorrow. Put those fears about Thomas following in the steps of Anthony Salter and Jordan Coleman to rest. More on this in tomorrow’s edition of the Star-Advertiser. But here’s a sampling from Arnold: “Yeah, I think we have (hammered out our differences) at this time […]

Holding pattern

By Brian McInnis on February 21, 2011

Nothing has been resolved as of yet on the status of Hawaii sophomore forward Joston Thomas, who did not accompany the team on its road trip to UC Davis over the weekend. Thomas was not at the team’s noon shootaround back at UH today, extending his absence from team activities to about a week. Hawaii coach Gib Arnold said he’d be meeting with Thomas later today. Arnold said again that Thomas, the team’s third-leading scorer at 10.4 ppg, hasn’t done […]

Concern about J. Thomas

By Brian McInnis on February 17, 2011

Sophomore forward Joston Thomas wasn’t at Hawaii basketball practice again this morning, the last full team session before the Rainbow Warriors take to the road to play at UC Davis on Saturday. It marked the second straight day the 6-7, 235-pound Thomas, one of three Rainbow Warriors averaging double-figure points (10.4 ppg) was not present with the team. In UH’s 69-67 overtime win against Nevada on Monday, Thomas started but played only 9 minutes as UH coach Gib Arnold went […]

Thompson out for now, MRI results still pending

By Brian McInnis on February 16, 2011

Hawaii senior point guard Hiram Thompson watched team practice from the sidelines today with his left arm in a sling, a result of the hard fall he suffered in the second half of the team’s win over Nevada on Monday. Thompson had an MRI taken on his elbow, which the tri-captain said he hyperextended when he braced his arm straight to cushion the fall. “The doctor still needs to look at the MRI to see exactly what it is,” Thompson […]

Thompson update // Arnold ESPN chat transcript up

By Brian McInnis on February 15, 2011

You get the feeling that Hawaii’s 69-67 overtime win over Nevada last night will resonate for a while, especially if the Rainbow Warriors can follow it up with a road win at UC Davis on Saturday in the ESPNU BracketBusters event. Though the win was terrific, the team could be without starting point guard Hiram Thompson for the rest of the season. He went down hard on his left arm early in the second half and didn’t return. His arm […]

Journey back in time

By Brian McInnis on February 11, 2011

That’s what it was late last night for Hawaii coach Gib Arnold and one of the Rainbow Warriors, junior point guard Miah Ostrowski. UH practiced in Punahou’s Hemmeter Fieldhouse late last night because all of the UH gyms — the Stan Sheriff Center, Gyms 1 and 2, and Klum Gym — were booked for intramurals. The team drove the short distance from the Manoa campus and went from about 8 to 10 p.m., right after Arnold arrived back in Honolulu […]

Thompson, Wiseman reflect

By Brian McInnis on February 9, 2011

Last week’s road trip to Boise State and Idaho was an interesting one for vastly different reasons for Hawaii senior point guard Hiram Thompson and freshman forward Trevor Wiseman. Thompson suffered an elbow-induced gash just above his eye in the opening minute of the 73-66 win at Boise State. He got six stitches mid-game and returned to play 16 minutes. Then in the 75-61 loss at Idaho, he started but played only 8 minutes because he felt sick both in […]
