Now visiting

By Brian McInnis on April 28, 2011

Recruiting is ongoing for the Hawaii men’s basketball team, and there will be visitors on the Manoa campus this weekend, but these particular young men are already signed and sealed. Fall signee Gerry Blakes of Morningside High and his future UH teammate, Dillon Biggs of Dorsey High, will be out and about for a couple days. As for the one remaining UH scholarship for 2011-12, you can effectively cross two more off the list — Crenshaw (Los Angeles) High guard […]

Thoughts on moves // Arnold extended

By Brian McInnis on April 16, 2011

Hey guys, Seems to be some nice pickups by Gib Arnold and Co. so far in this spring period. Had the signings not been accompanied by another piece of news, the departure of Bo Barnes,  it would have felt like a great day for the team. Instead, it was merely a good one. Though Barnes’ primary skill-set was obvious — bombing away from long range — that’s a coveted asset to have, even if the rest of his game wasn’t […]

Mitchell signs with UH

By Brian McInnis on April 14, 2011

Hey guys, this was my writeup on DeShawn Mitchell for our breaking news section, which apparently is having some technical difficulties on adding new stories at the moment: DeShawn Mitchell, a dynamic 6-foot-5 swingman formerly of Snow College (Utah), said he has signed and sent a letter of intent to play for the Hawaii men’s basketball team. Mitchell, who averaged nearly 24 points in 23 games at Snow, was dismissed from the team by his coach late in the season. […]

Rainbow Wahine sign 1

By Brian McInnis on April 13, 2011

Not to be forgotten among the maelstrom that is a Gib Arnold spring recruiting period is the UH women’s basketball team. Rainbow Wahine coach Dana Takahara-Dias announced on Wednesday the signing of 6-foot guard Ashleigh Karaitiana out of Endeavour Sports High School in Australia. Karaitiana averaged 24 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game in New South Wales State Youth League play, and also played as an amateur in the Australian Women’s National Basketball League. “She will be an […]

Recruiting update

By Brian McInnis on April 9, 2011

A late arrival in the big picture of UH recruiting is Anthony Odunsi, a 6-foot-4 combo guard at Fort Bend Travis High School in Texas. He recently de-committed from Iowa State and could be in the running for the final scholarship UH has to hand out for the 2011-12 season. Odunsi averaged about 18.3 points and 3.3 assists per game as a senior. UH coach Gib Arnold was in Texas today and will swing through California on his way back to […]

Team banquet set

By Brian McInnis on March 28, 2011

In the mood for celebrating the comeback season for Hawaii men’s basketball? Well, hold that thought for a few more weeks. The team’s postseason banquet has been officially set for April 21 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom. Gib Arnold was around for last year’s banquet, albeit as a guest as the newly minted head coach. This time, though, it’s his party, and he’ll haka if he wants to. Click here to bring up the banquet RSVP form, which […]

CIT update from Wallace

By Brian McInnis on March 17, 2011

This is all moot if the Rainbow Warriors can’t take care of business on Saturday against San Francisco, but the future is a little clearer for UH in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament should it advance to the third round (of eight teams remaining). CIT selection committee chairman Riley Wallace, the former UH coach, said that should UH beat USF, the Rainbows’ next opponent would be the winner of the Santa Clara-Air Force game played tomorrow (Friday). UH would go on […]

Wallace on UH hoops

By Brian McInnis on March 14, 2011

Our Ferd Lewis recently spoke to former UH coach Riley Wallace, now the chairman of the CIT selection committee, about Hawaii hoops. Courtesy of Ferd, here’s what Wallace had to say on a few things: On UH coach Gib Arnold calling Wallace to thank him for an invite to the CIT: “He just thanked me. I was in the casino so my phone didn’t take, but he left a (voice) message thanking me for putting the team in there. He said […]
