Avoid the trap

By Brian McInnis on February 4, 2012

It would be easy to look beyond today’s game at San Jose State to a much more appealing home matchup next week vs. WAC leader Nevada. That would be a huge mistake. We’ll find out pretty soon if the Rainbow Warriors get up for this game (tipoff is in about 45 minutes) against the last place team in the league, at a venue that doesn’t exactly scream big-time basketball, both in size and usual crowd turnout. UH dominated the Spartans […]

They'll get over it

By Brian McInnis on January 27, 2012

A spirited yet unfinished comeback attempt by Hawaii resulted in a narrow 77-72 defeat up in Logan, Utah, to still-dangerous-at-home WAC defending champs Utah State on Thursday. As evidenced in Gib Arnold’s postgame comments in our story by Jeff Hunter, UH (11-9, 3-3 WAC) won’t be upset about never going back there again, at least for a conference game. (That’s barring future conference shakeups, which we all know can and will happen.) So that’s one positive they can leave with. […]

Rainbows or Warriors

By Brian McInnis on January 17, 2012

Some nickname consistency would be nice, wouldn’t it? This has long been a hot topic about UH sports, and it’s been coming up more and more lately, it seems. Do you — and should you — call the UH men’s sports teams Warriors, Rainbow Warriors, or Rainbows? The UH men’s basketball team finds itself at a sort of unique crossroad as far as this goes, being that it incorporates both names. There’s been an unspoken movement going to phase out the […]

Important win

By Brian McInnis on January 12, 2012

It seemed like the classic “Hawaii jumps out to big lead on the road, only to cough up the lead when it mattered” game. This UH team had other ideas, coming up with a huge 74-68 win at Fresno State in overtime even after the Bulldogs came from behind to grab the lead with under 15 seconds left in regulation. Vander Joaquim made good on a considerable height advantage, and more importantly made the offensive plays in the second half […]

Tough cuts

By Brian McInnis on January 6, 2012

It was incredibly difficult paring down the list of Hawaii’s most memorable Western Athletic Conference games to 10.  Several BYU games got the spotlight, including the Ruffin and Whitlock buzzer beaters, and the 1994 WAC tournament championship. I wanted to highlight games from different eras of UH basketball. In some cases (the Carter-Smith Dynamic Duo years) the most memorable games happened outside of WAC play. Among the tough cuts, there were a few upsets of an often-ranked New Mexico; showdowns […]

What a game

By Brian McInnis on December 24, 2011

Wow. What else can you say after that one? Hawaii looked like it might pull a repeat of Thursday night’s heartbreaker against Auburn — trailing all the way, and nearly coming back at the finish only to fall short. But this time the Rainbow Warriors had enough juice to rally from 15 points down and finish the job against No. 14 Xavier, resulting in an 84-82 stunner in overtime. Joston Thomas had the game-winning basket off a baseline take to […]

Come on down

By Brian McInnis on December 22, 2011

Tonight’s two games to cap off the first day of the Diamond Head Classic are unquestionably the more interesting matchups on tap at the Stan Sheriff Center. No. 14 Xavier and Long Beach State has the potential to be great, even with the Musketeers missing their No. 2 scorer, Mark Lyons, as a result of the suspensions handed down after XU’s brawl with Cincinnati. The matchup of Xavier guard Tu Holloway (returning from a one-game suspension) and the 49ers’  Casper […]

New tradition?

By Brian McInnis on December 17, 2011

A big what’s up from Wailuku, Maui, locale of tomorrow’s game between Hawaii and North Carolina A&T of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Before delving into that game in tomorrow’s edition, let’s revisit some comments made after last night’s Hawaii vs. Hawaii-Hilo game in Kailua-Kona. As sparse as the turnout (331) was for the rare nonconference game between the system schools, coaches of both teams called the game a success. UH coach Gib Arnold has already talked to UHH coach Jeff […]
