New names // CSL Thursday

By Brian McInnis on August 1, 2013

Over the last two days, two new names have surfaced to join the Rainbow Warriors — one for the coming season and another (possibly) for 2014-15. Jack Hackman of Jesuit High (Ore.) and the Elite 24 AAU team tweeted an announcement of his pending arrival for 2013-14 and Daquan Phillips of  Bishop McDevitt High (Pa.) did something similar for 2014-15 in conjunction with retweeted congratulations from UH fans. I haven’t received confirmation of their arrival on the UH side of things […]

Shamburger showing the touch

By Brian McInnis on July 30, 2013

A discouraging College Summer League debut a few weeks ago is a distant memory for Keith Shamburger. The Hawaii basketball team’s starting-point-guard-in-waiting has flourished in his recent games for Clark Hatch Fitness, most recently uncorking a 22-point night on Tuesday in a 119-82 blowout of outmanned Grantco Pacific. He’s been given the keys to the Clark Hatch offense, which has resulted in five straight wins since an 0-4 start. He’s clicked on the go with CHF teammates Kaunaoa McGee and […]

UH walk-on watch list grows

By Brian McInnis on July 25, 2013

Add one more player to the list of prospective walk-ons for the Hawaii men’s basketball team. Dallas native Warren Oishi, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound guard, is hoping to become the latest addition to the Rainbow Warriors roster while he tries his hand at the College Summer League in Manoa. He joins hopefuls Malik Fields and Wesley Armbrust in the CSL. Oishi hit three 3-pointers for nine points on Thursday night for Central Medical Clinic in a 115-105 loss to Wealth Strategy […]

Back in action

By Brian McInnis on July 24, 2013

It felt good to be back in the Manoa Park gym on Tuesday night. My welcome back from an 11-day East Coast trip was a tasty matchup between UH guards, Keith Shamburger of Clark Hatch Fitness and Garrett Nevels of National Fire Protection. Freshmen Michael Thomas and Stefan Jovanovic also played and made their debuts for this blog. Shamburger played an effective floor game, tallying 14 points and somewhere close to double-digit assists (no official count) in routinely getting his […]

Scrappy night at summer league

By Brian McInnis on July 10, 2013

To quote Ron Burgundy, “That escalated quickly. That really got out of hand fast!” While no tridents were lobbed or hand grenades thrown, Tuesday night’s College Summer League action briefly became closer to Will Ferrell in Anchorman’s street melee scene than Will Ferrell playing hoops in Semi-Pro.  Chippy play in the second half of Solar Universe’s 97-84 win over Wealth Strategy Partners ramped up steadily, until a frustrated Julian Sensley got into it with UH senior guard Brandon Spearman with […]

Nevels impressive in CSL debut

By Brian McInnis on July 7, 2013

Garrett Nevels made the most of his College Summer League debut on Saturday night, with one exception. The University of Hawaii transfer guard from Mount San Antonio College (Calif.) could not hit the game-winning shot from about 28 feet at the final buzzer. Nevels and his new National Fire Protection team fell, 96-95, to Central Medical Clinic at the Manoa Park Gym, despite 28 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists from the UH newcomer. It was an impressive debut in […]

They're (getting) here

By Brian McInnis on July 6, 2013

At least some of the new and returning Hawaii hoops players will be in action tonight at the Manoa Park Gym for the College Summer League. It’s not 100 percent certain which players will and won’t be there Saturday night, but at least some should. Based on the initial league rosters, the Rainbow Warriors who might be watchable tonight are: 6 p.m. game, Wealth Strategy Partners vs. Grantco Pacific: Caleb Dressler 7:30 game, National Fire Protection vs. Central Medical Clinic: […]

2 UH hopefuls at summer league

By Brian McInnis on July 2, 2013

While many fans wait for the 2013-14 Hawaii men’s basketball players to arrive in the coming week and showcase their skills in the College Summer League, two players already in action are hoping to latch on with the Rainbow Warriors as walk-ons for the coming season. Malik Fields of Jackson Community College (Mich.) and 2011 Moanalua graduate Wesley Armbrust (most recently of Division II North Greenville in South Carolina) are eager to showcase their skills for a chance at the […]
