Warrior Beat: Hawaii football’s lessons as spring ball closes

By Stephen Tsai on April 28, 2019

When statuesque models in outlandish getups walk the runway, the question usually is: Who would buy such outfits? The answer, of course, is nobody. Fashion shows are about material, colors, symmetry staged in exaggerated forms. And so it was with the Warriors’ spring game, which was set to a circus theme. The sideshows and characters were for entertainment. The purpose of the 90-play game was to determine the Warriors’ fabric. And here’s what we learned exiting spring training: > Depth: […]

Hawaii football: Nick Rolovich and spring game entertain

By Brian McInnis on April 27, 2019

The final score, in the words of Hawaii football coach Nick Rolovich, was as follows. Team Mauka: 11,100,000 points Team Makai: 9,200,000 points It was that kind of evening at the T.C. Ching Complex field. No one was taking the UH football spring game too seriously, least of all Rolovich, who was decked head to toe in a clown costume that would make Pennywise cringe. There was a circus theme for the evening, with RJ Hollis, the MC, dressed as […]

The Warriors held their final full spring football practice today. There will be a light walk-through session on Friday afternoon. The spring game is set Saturday, with the circus-themed event beginning at 4 p.m. at the Ching Athletic Complex. Unlike previous years, this spring game will match two full teams — Mauka (first-team offense, second-team defense) vs. Makai (first-team defense, second-team offense). The game — four quarters of running time — should answer some depth-chart questions. Maybe. The past week, […]

Warrior Beat: Hawaii football hits local recruiting circuit

By Stephen Tsai on April 17, 2019

If your Oahu high school fields a varsity football team, that was a UH football coach wearing an H-logo shirt on your campus on Monday. The NCAA’s evaluation period for football prospects began this week. It is a time when college assistant coaches may visit a football-playing school to meet with coaches, teachers and counselors to discuss football prospects. UH coach Nick Rolovich‘s plan was to make sure an assistant coach visited every Oahu school with a football team. “We […]

Hawaii football: Chris Brown enjoys the show

By Brian McInnis on April 16, 2019

Blood and sweat. When Craig Stutzmann thinks about his playing days alongside Chris Brown, those substances come to mind. Vividly, too, as Brown, the former Rainbow Warrior standout linebacker (1999 to 2002), is back in town. The 39-year-old still resembles wrought iron in human form. “He’s tough as you-know-what,” said Stutzmann, one of a handful of members of the UH coaching staff (including head coach Nick Rolovich) who suited up with Brown. “Toughest guy that I know, mentally, physically. I […]
