Hawaii football: Kai Kaneshiro straps up at nickelback

By Brian McInnis on July 31, 2019

Kai Kaneshiro’s natural instincts have been unleashed. Kaneshiro, a Saint Louis School graduate who’s in his second fall camp with Hawaii, is still a defensive back. But in the spring, the UH coaches switched him from cornerback to nickelback going into his redshirt freshman season. It boils down to proximity for the 6-foot-2 youngster with hybrid talents. “I actually really like the switch to be more closer to the ball. I’m always around it. I really like it,” Kaneshiro said […]

Hawaii football practice No. 5: Pads on, restrictions off

By Stephen Tsai on July 31, 2019

Today’s first fully padded practice meant anyone who did not throw or kick a football was a target. “It was exciting,” nickelback Eugene Ford said of the two full-contact, 11-on-11 sessions. “All that tagging off (in limited-contact practices), we’re not used to that. We play football in full pads. It gives us a good feel of what it’s going to be like in a game.” The defense set the tone — and imprint — early. On the first play of […]

Hawaii football: Justus Tavai keeps mid-camp tabs on brother Jahlani

By Brian McInnis on July 30, 2019

Jahlani Tavai reached up, batted a ball thrown by NFL veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford, hauled it in and took off running. You can bet the Detroit Lions’ rookie linebacker’s younger brother, Hawaii defensive tackle Justus Tavai, heard, saw and talked all about it right after UH football practice Tuesday morning. The two brothers and former Rainbow Warriors teammates are still tied by bonds of training camp. They just happen to be thousands of miles apart. Jahlani Tavai was taken as […]

Hawaii football: Specialists Stan Gaudion, Ryan Meskell welcome the action

By Brian McInnis on July 30, 2019

At a typical Hawaii football practice, the specialists — kickers, punters, long snappers and the like — form their own little group in an adjacent grass clearing to hone their craft while the offense and defense clash on the elevated practice field. But when they’re called in for some team-wide special teams work, with the full roster and coaching staff either participating or spectating, that’s their time to shine. It’s not quite action under the bright lights, but as fall camp goes, […]

Hawaii football: Practice No. 4 is shell day

By Stephen Tsai on July 30, 2019

For today’s practice, the Warriors donned shoulder pads for the first time in training camp. That meant an escalation in contact during 11-on-11 situational drills. “It gave us a little taste of what football’s like,” quarterback Cole McDonald said of the two-hour practice on UH’s grass field. During the team segments, the Warriors worked on situations, such as third-down plays with varying lines to gain. McDonald made two highlight-worthy plays. He teamed with Jason-Matthew Sharsh on an 85-yard touchdown. On […]

1987 NCAA basketball hero Keith Smart makes appearance at Hawaii football practice

By Stephen Tsai on July 29, 2019

The basketball player who sank “The Shot” to win the 1987 NCAA Tournament — Indiana’s Keith Smart — attended the Rainbow Warriors’ football practice this morning on UH’s grass fields. Smart’s son, Jared Smart, has been the No. 1 left wideout in the first three practices of training camp. The elder Smart is now an assistant coach with the New York Knicks. * * * * * In an homage to Crane Park hoops, the Warriors’ final session today featured […]

Hawaii football training camp: Day 2

By Stephen Tsai on July 27, 2019

For the second day of training camp, the Warriors again ran a double huddle. This time, the experienced quarterbacks — Cole McDonald, Chevan Cordeiro and Justin Uahinui — were grouped together. Kamali‘i Akina, a transfer from College of San Mateo, and freshmen Boone Abbott and Zach Daniel were in the second group. It was a good strategy. McDonald, Cordeiro and Uahinui are far enough ahead they can focus on their timing and getting prepared for the season. The younger quarterbacks […]

Hawaii football: Jason-Matthew Sharsh prepares to step up

By Brian McInnis on July 27, 2019

Sixteen touchdowns. One-thousand, three-hundred and forty-three yards. That’s what John Ursua did last season for Hawaii on 89 catches. Ursua, who left Manoa a season early, was drafted in the seventh round by the Seattle Seahawks, leaving a hole in the Rainbow Warriors’ offense considerably larger than his 5-foot-10 frame. A single player alone will not likely make up what Ursua did in the run and shoot. One of those who will try to defray his loss is fifth-year senior […]
