Fanupo Peapealalo earns Hawaii football scholarship

By Stephen Tsai on August 10, 2019

To fringe fans, defensive end Fanupo Peapealalo‘s name is not one of the first to be answered in a UH game of word association. He grew up in Riverside, Calif., went to NAIA Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, for two years, and then joined the Warriors in 2017. Since then, he redshirted in 2017 and logged one game in 2018. But then at every practice, he was pounding away, either on the scout team or in the regular defensive rotation […]

Hawaii football: Eugene Ford revs engine at nickel

By Brian McInnis on August 9, 2019

The first time Eugene Ford took the nickelback position out for a spin, it felt like driving on a freshly paved highway. Last Nov. 17, Ford, then a sophomore, slid over from cornerback for the first time on senior night against UNLV. Hawaii came back from a 15-point fourth-quarter deficit to stun the Rebels, 35-28. “First game at a different position, we came back and won. That was big right there,” said Ford, who’s primarily played nickel ever since — the […]

Hawaii football: Ilm Manning engineers strong start to college career

By Brian McInnis on August 7, 2019

Ilm Manning pledged to make all aspects of his college career about learning, be it as an athlete or a mathlete. Manning jumped straight into the trenches as a true freshman at Hawaii last fall, earning the starting left tackle job for the duration of the 2018 season. So, too, did he plunge into the UH pre-engineering program, taking some difficult math and calculus courses in his first two semesters of college. “It is pretty challenging, all the calculus classes […]

Nakagawa named head trainer for Hawaii athletics

By Stephen Tsai on August 7, 2019

Lyn Nakagawa has been named UH’s head athletic trainer. Nakagawa succeeds Eric Okasaki, who retired last week after serving as head trainer for more than 35 of his 46 years at UH. Nakagawa is a highly regarded trainer who has worked with several UH teams. She also serves on the National Athletic Trainers’ Association’s board, as well as being the District 8 director. Nakagawa, who grew up in Pearl City, is a Punahou School graduate and former soccer standout. She […]

Punahou was latest stop on Hawaii football’s practice tour

By Stephen Tsai on August 6, 2019

For the third time in the past four practices, the Warriors worked out at an off-campus site. Today’s practice was at Punahou School’s Alexander Field because 1) the concern about inclement weather, 2) UH’s only football field with artificial surface was unavailable because of construction at the Ching Athletic Complex. The practice proved to be productive in: 1) Adjusting to a different venue, 2) bonding, 3) practicing on artificial turf. This season, every UH football game will be played on […]

Hawaii football: Linebacker Pritchard honors late teammate Scheyenne Sanitoa

By Brian McInnis on August 5, 2019

The hot sun beat down on player, coach, and reporter alike at the Manoa grass practice field on Monday. Understandably, linebacker Jeremiah Pritchard asked if he could strip off his pads before granting a post-practice interview request. When he shed the cumbersome gear, it revealed his undershirt — which bore a tribute to his late UH teammate Scheyenne Sanitoa. Sanitoa died on July 4, just over a month ago. Their bond was strong. Pritchard and Sanitoa had more in common […]

Warrior Beat: Sharsh, Furuta, Padello, Se‘ei picked as Hawaii football captains

By Stephen Tsai on August 5, 2019

Three former walk-ons and a grayshirt have been selected as the Hawaii football team’s captains. After today’s practice in Manoa, head coach Nick Rolovich announced the selections of slotback Jason-Matthew Sharsh, running back Dayton Furuta, rush end Kaimana Padello and nose tackle Azia Se‘ei. Rolovich said the picks were made in voting by the UH players. Each of the captains is a senior. Sharsh, a 2015 Moanalua High graduated, redshirted in his first UH season in 2017 while recovering from […]

Hawaii football: James Phillips introduces himself to Aloha Stadium

By Brian McInnis on August 4, 2019

James Phillips made quite the first impression at Aloha Stadium. It was just a practice, sure, but there will only be a handful of those at the Rainbow Warriors’ home venue, at most, before the start of the 2019 season against Arizona on Aug. 24. UH went there Saturday morning because of the possibility of inclement weather on its grass practice field on campus. Phillips, a sophomore receiver who’s operated mostly at second-team depth, had two long touchdown catch-and-runs in […]
