Down 13-7 and trotting onto the field for what seemed like the 100th time, the Noga boys had enough. Defensive tackle Al Noga and outside linebacker Petelo Noga combined to drop Bulldogs quarterback Kevin Sweeney five times and Hawaii beat Fresno State 24-13 in front of an Aloha Stadium crowd of 35,546. San Diego State rolled up 326 rushing yards in overpowering Hawaii, 34-10, today at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif. The Aztecs used two long scoring runs en route to a 28-0 advantages at the intermission. The Aztecs attempted only one pass in the second half — and it was intercepted by Quentin Frazier. On this date in 1970, Hawaii needed every yard to beat tiny Linfield College in front of 17,181 fans at Honolulu Stadium. Running back Larry Sherrer provided just enough. Sherrer toted the load 33 carries for 172 yards, the most important being the last 10 to give the ‘Bows the lead for the first time with less than five minutes left. There was a time when UH football took a definite back seat to the prepsters. On this date in 1965, a crowd of 2,807 turned up to watch Santa Barbara beat Hawaii 3-0 in the mud at Honolulu Stadium. The Rainbows sacked the quarterback 10 times on 27 passing plays and Hawaii beat Southeast Missouri State 34-0 in front of the smallest Aloha Stadium crowd in five years (22,891). The Rainbows scored twice in the first 11 minutes and their stellar defense made it hold up in a 13-0 victory over the Town Team. On this date in 1973, Harold Stringert victimized Santa Clara to break a UH record in a 40-9 victory in front of 22,987 fans at Honolulu Stadium. Stringert, a cornerback, returned a punt 82 yards for a score, beating Bobby Ahu‘s 65-yard effort in 1969 against Linfield. Stringert’s mark held until Gerald Green returned a punt 85 yards for a touchdown against Arizona in 1977. That mark still stands.
