Hawaii Football Throwbacks: Washington

By Brian McInnis on September 14, 2019

What will it take for upstart Hawaii to pull off the upset of No. 23 Washington in Seattle today? All the Rainbow Warriors need to do is look at the blueprint of their forebears. In this week’s Hawaii Football Throwbacks, the Rainbows relive one of the signature road victories in program history, a 10-7 stunner of Washington and its 52,000 fans in the season opener on Sept. 15, 1973 at Husky Stadium. It was a period of transition for the […]

Hawaii football: Kalen Hicks, Warriors prepare for Washington’s hostile environment

By Brian McInnis on September 13, 2019

As tough road environments go — crowd, ambiance, weather — Washington’s 70,000-seat Husky Stadium could rank up there with some of the most intimidating Hawaii has played in in recent seasons. The Pac-12 stadium on the shores of Lake Washington (where UH coach Nick Rolovich entertained thoughts of a pirate landing) is one of the more unique venues in college football. Count senior safety Kalen Hicks among the unintimidated. “Our mind-set can’t really change. It’s going to be a new environment […]

Hawaii football: Running back Dayton Furuta undergoes surgery

By Stephen Tsai on September 12, 2019

Running back Dayton Furuta underwent ankle surgery yesterday morning, UH officials confirmed. Head coach Nick Rolovich said Furuta will miss several games but has not ruled out a return this season. Furuta suffered the injury on a 6-yard reception off a shovel pass in the second quarter of the Warriors’ 31-28 victory over Oregon State this past Saturday. Furuta, who is 5 feet 11 and 250 pounds, earned the nickname, “Froot Train,” because of his powerful pinball runs. Last season, […]

Hawaii football: Stovall shows he’s ready for run-and-shoot

By Dave Reardon on September 11, 2019

Melquise Stovall, like the rest of the University of Hawaii football team, was not intimidated by UH’s first two opponents just because they come from a so-called “Power Five” conference, and UH plays in a “Group of Five” league, the Mountain West. In fact, in Stovall’s case, as a freshman he played for Cal, another school from the same conference as Arizona and Oregon State. Hawaii vanquished the latter two Pac-12 teams to get off to its third 2-0 start […]

Hawaii football: By the numbers, Rainbow Warriors lead nation in only important stat

By Dave Reardon on September 10, 2019

Some people — especially coaches — will tell you that statistics mean nothing. And they’re right. Sometimes the best teams don’t have fancy numbers, individually or as a team. And sometimes those with great stats are losers. But just a couple of weeks into the season, the University of Hawaii football team leads in the stat provided on the NCAA web site that does mean something: UH is tied with 51 other of the 130 FBS squads with best winning […]

Kahuku lineman Micah Soliai Howlett commits to Hawaii football

By Stephen Tsai on September 10, 2019

What was supposed to be an uneventful Monday turned into a day of good news for the Rainbow Warriors. Right wideout JoJo Ward was named the league’s Player of the Week in the morning, and then then Micah Soliai Howlett a highly regarded offensive lineman from Kahuku High, commits to UH. And, of course, the Warriors’ victory over Oregon State on Saturday ensured that all UH student-athletes could order omelets as part of the training-table meal. Here’s the skinny on […]
