AP College Football Poll: Hey, have you beaten somebody?

By Dave Reardon on October 6, 2019

You’ve heard it before. People love to tell you your favorite team isn’t any good because, “They haven’t beaten anybody.” But your guys must have beaten somebody, because they’re 6-0. Of course, what they mean is that they haven’t beaten anybody GOOD. But what does “good” mean? Six weeks into the season “good” is in many cases still very, very debatable. And that’s why we have college football polls. So we can agree and disagree about who is good and […]

Hawaii football: A good bye

By Stephen Tsai on October 5, 2019

The Warriors completed their third — and final — practice of bye week with sprints and renewed enthusiasm. “I think the development of the offense is progressing,” associate head coach Brian Smith said after today’s two-hour practice at the Ching Athletic Complex. “You can see that — growing through the second half of the Washington game, then Central Arkansas, then Reno. You’re seeing a progression of confidence … and familiarity and comfort playing together with each other offensively.” This weekend […]

Defensive lineman Maurice Ta‘ala will join Hawaii football in 2020

By Stephen Tsai on October 3, 2019

Defensive lineman Maurice Ta‘ala of Faga‘itua High (Aua, American Samoa) told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser he has accepted a scholarship offer from the Warriors. Here’s the skinny: > Familiar name? Ta‘ala’s older brother is nose tackle Blessman Ta‘ala, who has started all 19 games of his UH career. > The elder Ta‘ala encouraged his brother to 1) first sign up for football, and 2) to join the Warriors. “I want to take the path my brother took,” Maurice Ta‘ala said. > […]

Hawaii football: National TV ratings are in for rout of Nevada

By Ferd Lewis on October 1, 2019

Despite being the latest game of the day and one-sided from the beginning, the University of Hawaii’s 54-3 victory over Nevada Saturday drew 254,000 viewers. The game on ESPN2 kicked off at 10:30 p.m. Eastern Time Saturday and concluded at 1:41 a.m. Eastern Time Sunday morning. UH led 28-0 in the second quarter and 31-3 at halftime. It out-drew the Wyoming-Nevada and Kansas-TCU games earlier on ESPNU and FS1 respectively, according to figures from Sports Media Watch. It was the […]

Remembering Hawaii football’s super fan

By Stephen Tsai on October 1, 2019

The next time somebody wonders about Hawaii football’s attendance, think about George “Kekoa” Furtado. Despite being weakened by cancer treatments, as well as lungs coated with Agent Orange from a war five decades earlier, Kekoa attended every UH home game in 2018. And he made it to the first two games at Aloha Stadium this year, saving each precious breath to cheer. The next time somebody wonders about root-root-rooting for the home team, think about Kekoa. He was elected as […]

Hawaii football: QB Cole McDonald wins Mountain West weekly award

By Stephen Tsai on September 30, 2019

The aftermath of Saturday’s one-sided victory added up to Hawaii quarterback Cole McDonald being named the Mountain West Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week. The Rainbow Warriors won their league opener, 54-3, over Nevada at Mackay Stadium. “It feels like a great team win all around,” McDonald texted to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser this morning. “The defense handled business, special teams came out with energy, and the coaching staff called great plays and schemes.” McDonald was 25 of 30 for 312 […]

Rainbow Forecast: Hawaii football off, volleyball and soccer home for Big West

By Brian McInnis on September 30, 2019

Its duties accomplished for the moment, the Hawaii football team exits stage left to make way for the Rainbow Wahine volleyball and soccer squads in this week’s Rainbow Forecast. The Rainbow Warriors (4-1, 1-0 Mountain West) and newly minted Big West Offensive Player of the Week Cole McDonald get a well-deserved break this week coming off their emphatic 54-3 win over Nevada in Reno — and ensuing travel difficulties getting home. The bye could serve the Warriors well heading into […]

AP College Football Poll: More No. 1s than playoff spots

By Dave Reardon on September 30, 2019

That midnight train to Georgia picked up three passengers this week, and the Bulldogs didn’t even play a game. Fellow Associated Press pollsters Gene Henley (Chatanooga Times/Free Press), Nathan Baird (Cleveland.com) and Tom D’Angelo (The Palm Beach Post) joined me with UGA at the top of the ballot. Georgia’s win over Notre Dame is still the best win of the season, by anyone. But that’s just one butterfly effect aspect of Clemson’s 21-20 victory over North Carolina, salvaged only by […]
