First practice

By Stephen Tsai on August 5, 2010

Some tidbits from today’s first football practice of training camp: • Left wideout Rodney Bradley practiced, insisting he had no discomfort in his surgically repaired left leg (broken fibia and tibia). But he said he had soreness in his right foot. Nothing major, he insisted, and he should be ready for tomorrow’s practice. • Right tackle Laupepa Letuli, who received a medical hardship for a left-knee injury in 2009, appeared to be in good health. • Defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga […]

UH camp: Manu in, Brown out

By Stephen Tsai on August 4, 2010

Defensive end Veni Manu has been cleared to join the Warriors. He participated in the orientation sessions yesterday, the first day for first-year Warriors to report to training camp. Manu, who signed with the Warriors in February 2009, is a 2009 graduate of Mililani High. He did not attend college during the 2009 fall semester while trying to earn a higher SAT score. He met that requirement, then had to wait for Upper Campus officials to allow him to join […]

Liz Chun back?

By Stephen Tsai on August 3, 2010

Word on the boulevard is Liz Chun will be back as host of the Coach Mack Show. She had served as the show’s host the past two years in addition to her job as sports director of what was KGMB-9 News. But she resigned earlier this year citing personal reasons.  Plans are in motion for Chun to return to the coach’s show. The past two years, Chun and a camera operator attended every road game. This time, according to early […]

Colt released

By Stephen Tsai on August 2, 2010

The Washington Redskins today released Colt Brennan, a move that came after they picked up former BYU quarterback John Beck. Ryan Tollner, one of Brennan’s agents, said if Brennan is not claimed during the 24-hour waiver period, he is free to contact teams. Tollner said all options in the NFL will be explored before looking to other leagues. Brennan was set to earn a base salary of $475,000, the minimum for a player credited with two years of NFL experience. […]

Courtesy of Dave Hansen (quarterback Austin’s dad), here are pictures from Friday’s outing at Camp Timberline in Makakilo:  * * * * *  Avis has selected TChahng as the winner of something that resembles a UH football media guide.  And — what’s this? — we have yet one more?  To enter Sunday’s drawing, please post: Gimme the darn guide. Please.  Avis picks a winner tonight.

Saturday ramblings

By Stephen Tsai on July 31, 2010

• As part of team bonding, quarterback Shane Austin treated the offensive linemen to an outing at Camp Timberline yesterday. Here are Laupepa Letuli and Adrian Thomas ready to roll: • Defensive back Kawika Borden, who has been impressive in summer workouts, is suffering from osteitis pubis  and will miss training camp. The same injury hindered cornerback Tank Hopkins, who might redshirt this season. • Just saw the latest UH roster, and noticed it included Skye Kaapuni, a former Pearl […]

Summer fun is over

By Stephen Tsai on July 30, 2010

It’s back to business as the Warrior football coaches meet today to finalize rosters and training-camp plans.  Team testing also concludes today. During the spring, each player was tested in several weight-lifting and running tests. Goals were set for the offseason conditioning programs. It appears almost everyone met or exceeded the goals.  * * * * *  Defensive coordinator Dave Aranda served an internship with the Cincinnati Bengals.  * * * * *  Avis has selected Made In Hawaii as […]

Update: Rob Fukuzaki

By Stephen Tsai on July 29, 2010

Remember Rob Fukuzaki?  The former KITV sportscaster was once on Oprah as one of  LA’s most eligible bachelors. Fukuzaki is one of the top sports anchors in L.A., host of a charity golf tournament and, now, engaged. He proposed at Pebble Beach, arranging for the ring to be placed in the 18th hole.  Rich2176 offers this update:  I’ve attached a couple of pictures from Rob’s tournament this past Monday, July 26 which was held at Angeles National Golf Club.  It’s […]
