Senior moment

By Stephen Tsai on January 29, 2011

Former UH slotback Greg Salas has one catch for two yards during today’s Senior Bowl.  “Just didn’t get a lot of balls thrown his way,” agent Kenny Zuckerman wrote in a text to the Warrior Beat. But Zuckerman said the most important phase was the practices leading to the game, and that Salas “had a solid week.” Zuckerman added: “Next up, combine!” Maybe it’s a good thing that most of the important scouting occurs in the practices leading to the […]

In no rush

By Stephen Tsai on January 28, 2011

A month after suffering a partially torn posterior cruciate ligament, former UH slotback Kealoha Pilares remains in Hawaii, receiving physical therapy. It has not been determined when, or if, he will train on the Mainland, as he had initially planned.  But Pilares will attend the NFL Scouting Combine at the end of February in Indianapolis. He also will participate in UH’s Pro Day in early April. * * * * *  A loud birthday shout-out to A-Joe, one of the […]

Warriors enter home stretch

By Stephen Tsai on January 27, 2011

The Warriors are entering the final recruiting weekend before next Wednesday’s signing day. And, this time, they will be helped by the NFL.  Because the Pro Bowl was moved to the Sunday between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl, for the first time, the all-star game will be held in Hawaii during the recruiting season. While UH probably won’t be allowed to offer a sideline pass to a recruit, there’s nothing stopping a tour of the freshly painted Aloha […]

Fab Five

By Stephen Tsai on January 26, 2011

We’ve read all of the recruiting lists, checked them thrice, and, frankly, we’re so confused we’re seeing stars.  So we’re going to Our Football Guy (OFG), who ignores scouting services and the number of suiters. Basing his system on research, projections — athletically and academically — and, yes, some gut feelings, OFG crafted his top five of local prospects: 1. Juda Parker (Saint Louis School), who can be a relentless pass-rusher as a defensive end in a 4-3 or outside […]

Final push

By Stephen Tsai on January 25, 2011

Warrior coaches are heading to the Mainland for a final recruiting push. Head coach Greg McMackin already is on the Mainland. He made home visits in Washington the past couple of days. Associate head coach Rich Miano was recruiting on the West Coast before going to Mobile, Ala., where he will attend the senior Bowl. In addition to watching former Warrior slotback Greg Salas, MIano will meet with NFL personnel, which should be helpful in promoting several Warriors.  With Hawaii […]

Warriors get running back

By Stephen Tsai on January 24, 2011

Running back Jared Leaf of Alhambra (Calif.) High told the Warrior Beat he has withdrawn his verbal commitment to San Jose State and will accept a football scholarship from the Warriors. He said he is 6 feet 1 and 230 pounds. He was a linebacker and running back at Alhambra, but will compete at running back for the Warriors. HIs step-father is Erin Hall, a former Saint Louis School quarterback who led the Crusaders to an Oahu Prep Bowl title […]

Warriors get 4 commitments

By Stephen Tsai on January 23, 2011

The Warriors today received commitments from: • Justin Vele, an all-state defensive end from Farrington High. Vele said he made a “soft” commitment to the UH coaches this morning. He is related to former Warriors Vince Manuwai of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Wayne Hunter of the New York Jets.  • Tavita Woodward, a defensive end/linebacker from Eastern Arizona. Woodward played at Kahuku High and McKinley High. He has three seasons of eligibility.  • Chinedu Amadi, a wideout who goes by […]

No rush on Tormey replacement

By Stephen Tsai on January 22, 2011

UH officials acknowledge it will take a few weeks before hiring a replacement for Chris Tormey, who has resigned to accept a coaching position at Washington State.  UH must advertise the opening for at least 10 days, then conduct interviews. UH head coach Greg McMackin returned from a recruiting trip yesterday afternoon, and probably won’t be able to advertise the position until at least Monday.  With signing day Feb. 2, and Tormey promising to follow- hrough on UH’s recruitment of […]
