By Stephen Tsai on April 12, 2013

One of the state’s top high school athletes — Punahou’s Larry “Tui”  Tuileta — told the Warrior Beat he has made an oral commitment to play for the Warrior football and volleyball teams. Tuileta, who will be a senior in the fall, said he will sign his letter of intent in February 2014. Although he will play both sports, his scholarship will be in football. Tuileta was twice named to the All-State first-team in both sports. This past football season, […]

Coaches clinic

By Stephen Tsai on April 10, 2013

The Warriors will be conducting a clinic for coaches this Saturday on the Manoa campus. The program includes seminars, open discussions, the 2-hour practice (featuring a full-pad scrimmage) and, of course, food and refreshments. NCAA rules prohibit a school from providing free food, which is why a $10 cover charge is being assessed. Registration is at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. For details, call (808) 956-6508. * * * * * * Maybe it’s the butterfly effect, but Scott Harding standing […]

Oh, line

By Stephen Tsai on April 9, 2013

There is great concern about the future of offensive lineman Jordan Loeffler, who suffered a serious injury to his left knee during Saturday’s practice. At the minimum, Loeffler is expected to miss the rest of spring training. * * * * * It also has been a very slow recovery for Chauncy Winchester-Makainai, who can play all of the positions on the offensive line. Winchester-Makainai is suffering from a back ailment that dates to the 2012 season. He was expected […]

Robocops

By Stephen Tsai on April 8, 2013

It is no secret that valuables, uh, often disappear at UH. Arena director Rich Sheriff made sure to provide extra security measures for the recent Hawaii Regional Robotics competition in the Stan Sheriff Center. He changed the locks to rooms used for storage, and gave the keys only to the event’s organizers. Campus Security, arena employees, school administrators and, even, Sheriff did not have access to those rooms. It’s sad that it’s come to this. But until McGarrett can solve […]

Another day in paradise

By Stephen Tsai on April 7, 2013

It felt as if it were 90 degrees in the shade, if there were any, for yesterday’s ’round noon 2-hour practice. Kealakehe running back David Fangupo didn’t mind. He didn’t mind that the locker room renovations were in the we’ll-get-to-it-soon stage. He didn’t mind that there’s talk of 6 a.m. practices in the fall. “Every day,” said Fangupo, who joins the Warriors this summer, “I wake up in paradise. Life is good.” * * * * * There were about […]

Kala‘i Lee; Volleyball Warriors still alive

By Stephen Tsai on April 6, 2013

Growing up, Kala‘i Lee wanted a festive party each year. No, the party was not for Kala‘i, whose birthday fell on the same week as Thanksgiving. His birthday wish was that any money that would be spent on gifts instead be used for his church’s annual dinner for homeless families in Waimanalo. He celebrated his birthday preparing and serving food, then sticking around to clean up. OK, make that two parties. His Christmas request was the same as his birthday […]

Still volleying

By Stephen Tsai on April 5, 2013

Because of a scheduling quirk and the addition of California Baptist as the MPSF’s 13th member, the volleyball Warriors will have their annual team banquet tomorrow night as part of the alumni weekend festivities. And because of a scheduling quirk and the addition of CBU, the Warriors still remain in contention for the final berth in the eight-team MPSF playoffs. They are 8-14 in the MPSF with two road matches remaining against UC San Diego next week. The Warriors would […]
