Miano steps up to the mic

By Stephen Tsai on July 13, 2014

The old joke in our  former news room was that when it came to interview subjects, Rich Miano was worth five Kafentzis brothers and a Lyndell Jones. Miano is smart, funny, glib and thoughtful — useful traits for his new assignment as color analyst for OC Sports’ telecasts of UH football games. Because of scheduling conflicts, Dick Tomey, who handled that position last year, will be only available for at least two UH games as an analyst. Miano said he […]

Taxing situation

By Stephen Tsai on July 12, 2014

You know none of Scott Harding’s punts resulted in a touchback last year. You know Harding also is used as a slotback, punt returner, holder and offset kickoff returner. But did you know that he pays taxes on his football scholarship? As a non-resident alien, the Australian resident’s scholarship is considered taxable wages and subject to U.S. federal tax withholding. Remember to thank Harding if that rail is ever built. * * * * * Jerrol Garcia-Williams exited spring training […]

Washington DE interested in UH

By Stephen Tsai on July 11, 2014

Defensive end Josh Shirley has left the Washington football team and expressed an interest in the Warriors, according to people in the know. Shirley, who amassed 18 sacks the past three seasons, actually has ties to the UH coaching staff. Head coach Norm Chow and running back coach Wayne Moses were with UCLA when they recruited Shirley to the Bruins in 2010. Shirley never played a game for the Bruins. That summer, Shirley, cornerback Shaquille Richardson and wideout Paul Richardson […]

Friends indeed

By Stephen Tsai on July 10, 2014

Thanks to three Warrior supporters, some emptiness has been filled. As noted a while back, the football locker and meeting rooms underwent significant renovations. The problem was the projects did not include new furniture. Head coach Norm Chow then turned to three friends. Jim Rodden and Mark Rodden of Hawaii Supply and Sam Chong of ABC Furniture agreed to pay for the material, assembly, shipping and labor to furnish the rooms. Total cost to UH: Zero. * * * * […]

Former Crusader receiver joins UH

By Stephen Tsai on July 9, 2014

Frank Kainoa Abreu, a former Saint Louis School receiver, has joined the Warriors as a walk-on. Abreu played well before suffering a foot injury midway through his senior season in 2012, according to former Crusader coach Matt Wright. Abreu attended Notre Dame College in Ohio last fall. He then transferred to UH-West Oahu, where he attended the past spring semester. Abreu can play both wideout positions and slotback. Abreu’s father, Sean, is a former UH football player. Here are his […]

Two LBs contact Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on July 8, 2014

Two linebackers who are seeking to transfer — Oregon’s Tyrell Robinson and Nebraska’s Jared Afalava — have contacted the Warriors. Robinson, who is 6-4 and 220 pounds, was a 4-star recruit in 2012. He played nine games as a true freshman for the Ducks in 2013. Last month, Robinson requested — and received — a release from his football scholarship. His twin brother — Tyree Robinson, a defensive back who redshirted in 2013 — will remain at Oregon. Afalava, who […]

All here

By Stephen Tsai on July 7, 2014

By last count, all the returning Warriors are enrolled in Summer Session II, which begins today. With a sizable donation from the Waterhouse Foundation, Na Koa club is paying for the returning Warriors to attend both summer sessions (as well as incoming freshmen to attend the two bridge-program classes). The summer plan serves two purposes: 1) Players can accumulate credits to accelerate the path to degrees, and 2) players can train together in Hawaii. Which brings us to the football […]

By Stephen Tsai on July 6, 2014

Yep, Tevarua “Teva” Eldridge, a middle linebacker from Baldwin High, is joining the Warriors as a walk-on and is projected to be on the 105-player roster for training camp. Eldridge is 6-2 and 235 pounds. He was named to the all-MIL first team in football and basketball this past academic year. Here’s his highlights: Eldridge videos * * * * * According to a UH release, season tickets for football go on sale tomorrow. They are available for purchase at […]
