Spring football: Practice #11

By Stephen Tsai on April 21, 2016

The Warriors started earlier (6:15 a.m. to accommodate players with early classes) and practiced lighter (in shorts instead of full gear) but still had a relatively animated practice. The defense, which struggled collectively on Tuesday, installed new blitz packages with some success. The Warriors also managed despite being down to three available defensive tackles. Here are some videos: Marcus Kemp Power/agility drill Zach Wilson (20) Makoa Camanse-Stevens (83), Terrence Sayles (36) Andrew James-Ho (85) On to the pictures: The alumni: […]

UH football: Doing more with less

By Stephen Tsai on April 20, 2016

Because of injuries, suspensions and circumstances, the student-teacher ratio has narrowed in recent football practices. The Warriors list 89 players on their spring roster. For yesterday’s practice, there were 15 players who were not available for contact drills because of medical and disciplinary reasons. In addition, six special-team players worked on their crafts at Ching field. leaving 68 players to practice on the grass field. On the Warriors’ hopeful side, no serious injury was incurred during the first 10 practices […]

Seeking a balance

By Stephen Tsai on April 18, 2016

Much like how natural wildfires can reset the ecosystem, fiery football practices also can provide useful sparks during a five-week-long spring training. In the first nine spring practices, the UH coaches have tried to find a balance between promotion and provocation; being chipper and chirping. That was evident in a scuffle during the past Saturday’s scrimmage. While fights, particularly the hold-me-back type, can be a boost to lackadaisical practices, Saturday’s scuffle rankled the coaches because it came during a red-zone […]

Bulk pickups

It is perhaps time for UH media relations to use “after” pictures for the football team’s online roster. Linebacker Malachi Mageo, defensive end David Manoa and offensive tackle Matt Norman have gained weight — and expanded roles. Mageo has transformed from a skinny safety to a sturdier strong-side linebacker. He was the No. 1 strong-side linebacker the past three practices after Dany Mulanga incurred a leg injury. Manoa has been a pleasant surprise at defensive end, using his quickness as […]

UH football: Coming to a school near you …

By Stephen Tsai on April 15, 2016

The nine full-time assistant coaches have embarked on the ultimate one-day excursion today, attempting to visit every Oahu high school that fields a varsity football team. This is the first day of the evaluation period in which coaches may visit high school campuses to meet with coaches, teachers and counselors. NCAA head coaches are not permitted to visit the schools during this period, but the full-time assistant coaches are free to go. There are 30 prep teams on Oahu. * […]
