UH football: Riding LEMO to graduation

By Stephen Tsai on May 15, 2016

Since the 1980s, California has endured cutbacks in after-school, extra-curricular programs. The LEMO Foundation has helped fill the void, providing an encompassing program (academics, athletics, life skills) for Northern California youths from at-risk or under-funded situations. LEMO stands for Liahona Motu, which translates to “compass” and “rock.” According to its Web site, LEMO provides youths “with the tools (compass) to navigate life’s challenges and foundation (rock) to go forward with confidence.” There also is a pay-it-forward element, with older LEMO […]

Warrior recruiting: 2020 vision

By Stephen Tsai on May 13, 2016

So, what’s your kid doing this summer? Noah Sewell is pondering college plans. He already has a football scholarship offer from UH. Thing is, Noah is 14 and completing eighth grade at Desert Hills Middle School in St. George, Utah. Noah isn’t a typical Generation X-Boxer. He is 6 feet and 230 pounds. Desert Hills Middle consists of eighth and ninth grades. Even though he will be a freshman this fall, he’ll still be in middle school but competing for […]

UH football: Carrying the pigskin

By Stephen Tsai on May 12, 2016

Defensive lineman Zeno Choi, who just completed his first academic year at UH, has shown a willingness — and ability — to fill a role. The past season, he relinquished a redshirt year to step into the short-handed defensive rotation. This past spring, he played nose tackle and 3-technique. There were some spring practices when he played every snap during team drills. This week, Choi fulfilled another role when he joined six friends on a pig-hunting outing. They sent the […]

New endeavors for former staffers

By Stephen Tsai on May 11, 2016

You could set a watch to Brad Jones. As the UH’s director of football administration for four years, Jones arrived before the sunrise, left after the green flash, and did most of the non-coaching chores necessary to a football operation. His diligence and connections fit his new job as Brigham Young-Hawaii’s athletic director. Here’s an update on some members from the previous staff: > Monica Morita: Morita, who was the Warriors’ executive assistant, is now UH-Hilo’s compliance coordinator and senior […]

UH players enter not-guilty pleas

By Stephen Tsai on May 10, 2016

Defensive tackles Kennedy Tulimasealii and Ka‘aumoana Gifford entered not-guilty pleas in District Court this morning. Here’s the skinny: Kennedy Tulimasealii > Action: Tulimasealii pleaded not guilty two charges of assault, one charge of resisting arrest, and one charge of harassment stemming from an incident with his ex-girlfriend on April 12. The assault and resisting arrest charges are misdemeanors; harassment is a petty misdemeanor. District Court Judge Lono J. Lee moved the case to Circuit Court for arraignment and plea on […]

Touching all bases

By Stephen Tsai on May 9, 2016

The nine assistant coaches begin their second week on the road, recruiting in their non-Hawaii base areas. (The NCAA prohibits head coaches from in-school visits during this evaluation period.) The Warriors’ non-Hawaii base areas are: > American Samoa > Australia > Bay Area > Southern California > Fresno > Las Vegas > Washington > Oregon > Utah > Arizona The Warriors still will recruit in other geographical areas. (They are in the running for a Midwest lineman.) And they have […]

Dee for determination

By Stephen Tsai on May 8, 2016

Consider this: Former UH cornerback Dee Maggitt’s six interceptions in seven games place second among Indoor Football League defenders this season. Consider this: Maggitt made an interception in his second UH game, in 2011, then went the rest of his college career — 42 games, including 19 starts — without another pick. “I’m finally healthy,” said Maggitt, who is in his first season with the Tri-Cities Fever. “I’m finally playing healthy.” Maggitt had a bittersweet stay at UH. His best […]
